Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Pet peeves don't have to agree with modern-day usage.

The American Heritage Dictionary Usage Panel agrees with you. However, I never found anything wrong with "destruction" or "annihilation."

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllll, ya kinda hafta think about it like this:
Yes.
And no.
See, the "bunker-buster" bombs can only go through 20 feet of concrete. ("Design-for press release conditions" - They really go much deeper, and how deep depends on the covering dirt, concrete, rooms, reinforcemnt, slope of the ground, etc.)
But the blast effect goes out from its penetration depth. THAT, in turn, depends on what the bomb is "inside of" when it blows up, and on how much explosive is packed in the bomb: a 500 lb bomb may carry 250 lbs of asteel and only 250 lbs of explosive.
A 2000 lbs bomb might be "packed" the other way around: 1500 lbs of high-strength sttel to penetrate deeper, but "only" 500 lbs of explosive.
However, those 500 lbs are exploding 30 feet deep, or are exploding INSIDE an enclosed bunker that can't vent" the force. Result is a crushing blow underground that can shatter walls and rocks much further away than "20 feet." Blows people parts far apart too - when it doesn't literally crush or bury their vent tunes in nearby tunnels.
Or just shock and vibrate. Consider underground eqpt: What good is a live general if his radios and telephones and crypto grear are dead because his generator is buried in the next tunnel over, or broken because their cabinet is knocked over and smashed up?
Personally, I favor the WWII 22,000 Grand Slam supersonic bombs: guided now by GPS. They could, in WWII, when dropped from prop-driver bombers, penetrate 100 feet of rock, and deliver 10,000 lbs of explosive.
Today's Air Force believes in the fuel-air-explosives (which obviously can ONLY explode ABOVE the ground), and wants to buy those, so they turned my ideas down.
Drat.

they'd have said "impossible"! No doubt. But they are irrelevant. The chattering of spider monkeys in the Amazon jungle is just as important.

Idiot on O'Reilly. Boo hooing it is a human rights violation to take out Iraqi TV. What an idiot.

I just heard on the news that a big meteor? (meteorite?) fell through the roof of a house and landed on a bed in Illinois last night.
They probably thought that one of Saddams missles had hit them. :-)
To: strela
Well, I'll be annihilated if I don't cook my wife dinner.
I know who wears the pants in this family!!! (yes, I'm sitting here pantless)

The posts were about the best places to live, best hot dogs, the best restaurants, whether chili 'n' cheese hot dogs are best with onions or jalapenos, etc.
Just light banter, no big deal...I wish they'd keep the threads the way they happened, rather than airbrushing them into the dustbin of history!

Anyone watching this moron Roth on O'Reilly....he just equated Fox News to Iraqi TV.
To: RightWhale
...except that this war will takes as long as it takes... I heard him say it this morning...left the reporter who asked the question "How long?" speechless...pregnant pause...sympathetic Pres. Bush fills in with..."you GOTTA understand that...THAT'S the answer to your question..." Like, which part of that DON'T you understand?
Blair followed eloquently with more soothing logic to help the baffled reporter understand..."...there's no point in asking how long you see...no one knows...until our objective is achieved, you see?..."
Blair also pointed out that over 400,000 CHILDREN have died of PREVENTABLE malnutrition under the 'SoDamn Insane' regime ...somebody call HILLARY!! It takes a village, for cryin' out loud. Haven't seen A THING about that anywhere else... Am I the only one who heard it?
To: Sparky760
Yeah, O'Reilly is spanking this guy.
To: Dog
Human rights guy sounds like George Stephanopolis if you aren't watching him.
To: Bush_Democrat
I didn't know that ... about Sears policy, but it makes me glad that I bought a new washer from them yesterday.
