***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 8 - LIVE THREAD***
Various | 3/27/2003 | Me

Posted on 03/26/2003 9:04:14 PM PST by Centurion2000

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Oh geez.......Syria is sending stuff to aid Iraq. Night vision goggles. Pentagon concerned: per Fox.

I am betting those "Syrians" killed on that bus were on the way to fight!

"Iraqi Defense Min:US troops will surround Baghdad in 5-10 days."

I read that as surrender and figured Depends Minister must have taken a round to the head.

Since the controls are reversed (throtles on left) on close approach I automaticly cross controled when things got dicy and crashed!

Okay, pull back the stick, and... Hey, where'd my power go? ;-)

Other than that, flying it compared to the prop planes that i'm used to, it was very easy to fly.

I've heard that turbines (as opposed to recips I'm used to) are slow to respond to control inputs; one's got to think and set the power far ahead of time.

Laurie Dhue has a team of professional lip gloss handlers on hand for the emergency 2 am news reports.

Cracked me up the other night when Laurie was apologizing to Colonel Hunt for keeping him up for a 2am interview - he said "Oh yeah, like spending the early morining hours with you is like real torture" - that guy is great.

Sky interviewing rep from Mercy Corps, Cassandra Nelson. She is giving intelligent answers (American! Redhead!) saying it's not a good idea to go in when the area's still hot. She tells how before they do humanitarian aid, first have to do a quick assessment. She's saying that there's no large displacement of people.

Q: Kuwaiti Red Crescent delivery was a disaster yesterday?

A: MC Corps rep: talks about going door-to-door and give vouchers. She's talking about long-term delivery also. Need to rebuild ability to maintain their livelihood so that they aren't dependent on handouts.

Very intelligent. You go, girl!

5 to 10 days tells me we'll slow the pace, use lots of air support, let the Northern/Western Front close in, and stay focused on cleanup in Basra, Umm Qasr, etc.

IMO, we could be there tomorrow with significant risk.

I've thought the military strategy all along was to push inwards to develop a ring around Baghdad and then wait it out. We assure ourselves of eliminating outside threats, reduce risk of missile attacks on Kuwait and Israel, provide positive humanitarian efforts where secure, get Iraqi people on our side and then let Baghdad stew...

Part of the reason we've kept infrastructure in place, IMO to get news of "liberated" cities into Baghdad....

...then again...what the hell do I know.
