Top U.S. General: Iraq Executed POWs

WASHINGTON — Iraq has executed prisoners of war, the Pentagon's No. 2 general said Wednesday night as he listed a series of what he called unprecedented Iraqi violations of the laws of war.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, apparently was referring to some of the U.S. Army troops captured Sunday by Iraqi forces in the city of An Nasiriyah. Iraqi state television later showed video footage of five living POWs and the bodies of at least five U.S. soldiers.

Defense officials who have viewed the tape have said privately that several of the bodies had execution-style gunshot wounds to their heads.

Intelligence officials have received one uncorroborated report indicating that at least some of the dead soldiers had been captured alive and executed in public, a senior Pentagon official said Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The information -- which did not come from an intercepted communication, as the New York Times reported Wednesday -- is of undetermined reliablility, the official said.

Okay, they are violating the laws of war.

Can our leaders stop being candy asses now and start carpet bombing Bagdad back to the stone age before any more of our troops get killed?

Where's that Mother of All Bombs, dammit?

When I heard this announced on FNC just now, I thought it meant the five who were still alive had been executed today! I guess this is just a confirmation of what was speculated about when it first happened on Saturday and the videotape was aired.

Everything from the New York Times is of undetermined reliablility, except for Paul Krugman's stuff. That's been vetted as pure hysterical crap.

War ain't nice, and we can't make it nice with this so called stratigic bombing. So what are the iraq soldiers doing during the bombings? Probably steping across the street for a smoke until we are done.

I hope we don't get bogged down in another Viet Nam...

My wife thought the same thing, that they had executed the 5 living POW's from the video. I told her, that can't be, Iraq isn't that stupid. If they DID, we'd take the gloves off and we'd see Baghdad being bombed to smitherines. Anyone guarding a POW knows that if they harm or kill them, they may as well be comitting suicide. I'm sure that these POW's are probably being treated better and better, as we advance towards Baghdad. I told my wife, "would you throw away a lottery ticket?"

Reading Paul Krugman is a guilty pleasure, I'll admit. Scanning his screeds is like the Brits in WW II who listened to "Lord Haw-Haw" on German radio for the sheer entertainment of his absurd untruths.

You have to understand the "Iraqi military" as was known before last Wednesday is either dead, in hiding or standing in a trench with five minders from the creeps-in-jeeps brigade.

For the most part, the guys who gave the orders are dead. Unfortunately for our POWs the animals who carried out those orders are now in charge.

dead soldiers had been captured alive and executed in public. These are the POWS that were on the tape. These aren't the other five live POWS. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Certainly this is a violation of the law of war.

On the other hand, talk to U.S. veterans of WWII, and you will discover that: (1) in Europe, we did not take SS prisoners after the Battle of the Bulge (because of SS conduct at Eupen and Malmedy), and (2) in the Pacific, we took few Japanese prisoners (because of experience with false surrenders like what we've seen in Iraq).
