It's not politically correct to have English class. In California (I know - it's California) it is now called "Language Arts".

In Computer Lab he should be studying computers, not drafting personal petitions. True, but if this was just the use of the computer outside of class..?
Sounds like Poulin is just trying to support the military which holds family and/or friends, staying abreast of world affairs and attempting to make a contribution in some way. Certainly cannot begrudge him such.
Compare this to those students leaving school for protest rallies and don't even know what they are protesting about?
Poulin stays in school and poses some questions..seems diplomatic to me.

Come to think of it, we took Language Arts in junior high. We were back to English by high school, though.

*Study* the culture. I've been doing so for months. Look at the Koran, the Sunna, the Al Hadish, the Sayings of Mohammed.
And the more you read, the worse it gets. There's little to avoid getting your eyes opened in a serious way if you go to the original texts.
Then write an essay to knock their PC socks off!

My, my. What an appropriate name for this dogmatic bureaucrat.

THEY would like to choose their own subjects Thus you judge all students on that premise?
I don't see it being an issue..he's a good student just asking for an alternative project..let's chalk it up to a "sensitivity issue"...would that be more PC then asking to drop a Muslim study project?

How are the kids in a mess? I think he meant the Muslims are in a mess.

Krapf said. "As a public school we must prepare students to go out into different types of culture because our job is to help the students, these young adults, to fit in and understand other cultures." It would be one thing if they would teach the truth about those other different types of culture but you know they'll teach a fairy-tale version.

Well... that's kinda my point. I don't know that this is any kind of "Muslim study project." We know that it's a "senior English class project," that it's part of the curriculum, that it's been rotating around for awhile... but it's not clear exactly what is expected. If he had to read a book on Gandhi and do a book report, would that be a "Hindu study project?" The Islamic nature of the assignment might be incidental. "Krapf said the study of the Arab and Muslim culture and religion has been a class at the high school since the new curriculum was adopted several years ago."
Just a suggestion, but how about that "Hindu Study Project?
Just One Year out of several?
Or a Year of Studies concerning Judaism?
When the "Public" school curriculum provides for a required study of ONE religion, excluding all others, that is a violation of the 1st amendment.
It has been stated over and over again, in myriad legal opinions and court decisions concerning religion.
Schools can have Religious Studies as part of the curriculum, but it must cover religion in a broad sense, and cannot focus exclusively on any one religion.
This is the argument that kept CHRISTIAN studies OUT of public schools.
( I know this post sounds "harsh", please don't take it as any sort of angry response against You. After "proofing" it, I realised it sounded like I was kind of "ticked off" at You, but it is simply an argument in support of the students point of view.)

I showed great interest in dissecting a frog in Biology class but learned not to dissect a person's remark such as : "have a good day"...What?.. is something going to happen? What do you know that I don't! :(
I don't think this goes any deeper then what Poulin professes his intent to be.
Seems he is trying to just seek names for a petition against his Muslim study in a high school English class;but he cannot fight city hall alone...needs full UN approval that sort of thing.... ;)

Dear Richard,
Go ahead and study their religion and their 'culture'.
It'll make it easier for you to kill large numbers of them when you get the opportunity.

L

Poulin said. "How come we can't sit down and study why we worship what we do, but we can sit down and study what another country does?" Poulin said. "How did it come we can't sit down and study why we worship what we do, but we can sit down and study what another country does?"

If you compare Texas History with muslim culture again, I know a few Texans, including me, who may just come right through your keyboard after you. Isn't there a law somewhere that says everyone should study Texas History?
If there's not, there OUGHTA be. Hmmmphhffft.
