The bridges into Baghdad are rigged with explosives, and a large convoy of Republican Guard units was heading south toward U.S. troops, wire reports said today.
Those reports, quoting intelligence officers with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said at least 1,000 Republican Guard vehicles were advancing toward U.S. Marines in central Iraq. But at a press briefing today, the U.S. military dismissed those reports.
"We have not seen any significant movements ... in and around Baghdad. There have been some local positionings. There have been some survival positionings ... but we certainly remain, we believe, well in control of the situation at hand," Brig. Gen. Vincent Brook told reporters in Qatar today.
In other developments, coalition missiles killed a dozen people in a residential Baghdad neighborhood, Iraqi officials claimed, but U.S. officials could not confirm those reports.

I won't be at all surprised if the RG convoy supposedly advancing on the Marines turns out to be false. It would be an incredibly stupid move by the Iraqis, though it would not be the first time they've pulled a stupid move.

Which have consisted of bending over and kissing their *sses goodbye.

"I won't be at all surprised if the RG convoy supposedly advancing on the Marines turns out to be false." An Iraqi "thousand vehicle convoy" would amount to nothing more than an arcade game for the air-to-mud and arty folks. Target practice.
One can only wish it were true. But it probably isn't...

Do they even have 1000 vehicles?
To: kattracks
Rats, and I was hoping for another turkey shoot on the Republican Guard, similar to the one in the last war.

Iraqis Rig Bridges; U.S. Rejects Reports of Iraqi Convoy Actually the convoy consists of a Yugo, fitted with a slingshot followed by an Iraqi soldier riding a camel.

I'm not disappointed. There are plenty of targets right in front of the 3rd ID and 1st Marine Division to keep our aviators happy!

Yup.
Time to send in the JSOWs and CBU-97s with the BLU-108 skeet submunitions. All the ground troops will have to do is clean up afterwards.

Oh, yes. But none even close to the level our equipment. Much of it is T-54's and T-72's (late 1950's to early 1970's technology)

Do you suppose they were hoping the "rumor" of a large convoy would cause us to cut and run ...??
Rush has been talking about this since the war started. It appears that Iraq is basing their strategy on how we reacted in Mogodishu (sp?). In other words, if there are enough casualties we will cut and run.
They could not be more wrong!
