Suicide speedboat intercepted by Iran

U.S. and British naval forces are on high alert against seaside suicide attacks after Iranian gunboats intercepted an Iraqi speedboat packed with half a ton of high explosives.

Navy alerted for speedboats like these Zodiacs

Three other Iraqi speedboats got away when Iranian forces engaged Iraqis at the mouth of the Shatt-al-Arab River, the waterway that marks the border between the two countries.

The explosives were discovered after one of the Iraqi boats was run aground during the confrontation.

Coalition warships in the region have been on high alert for the risk of al-Qaida strikes since the suicide attack against the USS Cole in October 2000 in which 17 American sailors were killed, and last year's ramming of the French oil tanker, the Linburg.

But the discovery of the Iraqi speedboats is the first physical evidence that suicide attacks are being planned.

Arabic website promotes the idea of using rubber speedboats in terror attacks.

WorldNetDaily and Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin both warned about a large purchase of about 100 rubber speedboats by Iraq several weeks ago. The boats are the same kind used in sea attacks by Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations. The articles warned the Iraqi plan was to create an "anti-ship suicide flotilla."

The boats are of the Zodiac class and can, as terrorist groups have shown in the past, be fitted with explosives or rocket launchers.

Similar tactics were used for the attack on the USS Cole and in numerous attempts to attack Israeli shipping.

Zodiacs. Hmmm.

Don't they appear on that 'Boycott France' company list that has been circulating?

Iran also helped with Afghanistan. They are helping with the Kurd refugees, and probably helping the Shiite uprising in Baasra.

That's why we are starting with Iraq.

I assume that anything which comes within half a mile of any of our ships (on the water) is fish food...

Iran is the unwritten story of this war. Come back to the West, Iran.

I think we should let Iran assist us in this war. They may not be our friends, but when we can't tell who the anti-Saddam groups are in Iraq, they would be able to.

Concerning Iran......My enemy's enemy is my friend.....at least until the war is over. Checking a map, I then note we have Iran surrounded with countries who will not support the Militant Islam Politics they support and hopefully it will place us in a better position to contain the terrorism they support.

Unfortunately the statement also holds true for Sadam and the terrorist Organizations he, of course, has no ties to. I do believe though he has been covertly funding terrorism for years so maybe the statement has a bot less validity.

Yup. And not a gesture that involves extending the middle finger. 8>)

In the last 5-10 years the relationship between Iran and America has gone from a hate relationship to a love-hate relationship, at least on the part of Iran. Iran could become one of our strongest allies, once the mullahs are overthrown.

My suspicion is the mullahs won't be overthrown they will be eased into a less visible role.

Despite the clashes of the 80s, Iran and the US are traditional friends thanks largely to the Soviets. There's no way they haven't been enjoying our attacks on Sadam at a visceral level. Between this war and our upcoming focus on a fair solution in the West Bank and Gaza, I expect us to make great headway with Iran...which should lead to their quiet dropping of any terrorists they support.

Their bunkers were built by engineers from the former Yugoslavia, not the Germans, according to what I've read online.
