Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

Bingo - there have been significant uprisings there the past 12 months. Further, you have to consider the likelihood that the original overthrow of the Shah was sponsored by the old KGB in an act of excellent tradecraft, and the RVS isn't particularly concerned about that anymore.

I would say those are disgruntled/disruptor peace protesters who are trying to rush this war and bring about huge civilian casualties so the pressure will be there to end the war.
It's not that they care about the amount of casualties, just the length of the war.

I hope all this is more credible than their "massive chemical weapons factory" report the other day. Has this story been confirmed anywhere else?

Oh, and killing us and blowing up their stuff, right?
They're all exactly the same, no difference, right?

Methinks that ever changing hair coloring by Katie is damaging what is left of her brain cells. Criticial thinking and integrity were bleached out long ago and now what's left is blatantly visible for all to see. KATIE HATES AMERICA

You know what I want to see? I want to see Robert Fisk with his hands tied behind his back with a heavy duty tie wrap, waiting for his trial as a traitor, just like Tokyo Rose.

WAIT! Shi'ites are still Muslims, so we have to kill them after this, right? Only if they later decide to kill us for Allah.

I know they are the "less liberal" types. That doesn't necessarily mean bad news. I suspect the Kuwaitis are pretty "fundamentalist" too, as are the Qatarians and Abu Dhabians and United Arab Emirates, but they are relatively friendly with us.

I have a feeling that our troops are going to find a lot of barbecued, hung up, or mutilated bodies of former Ba'athists in Basra. Justice will be messy. Our Pyschops guys should take videos and pictures of the barbequed Ba'athists and distribute them all over Baghdad as a coming attraction.

Dear Shiites,
Sorry for leaving you in the lurch last time. We paid too much attention to the U.N. then. Fortunately, we're ignoring them this time so feel free to deal out a little payback. If you'd rather not exchange gunfire with these thugs yourself, just tell the closest British Marine where they are and he'll have it seen to.
Signed,
Your Coalition friends.

There's nothing good about the current boundaries, but it's better than the alternative--widespread re-arrangement of boundaries, leaving bloodbaths in the wake. No reason why Turkey should rule 15 million Kurds, etc. Iraq as a federal republic could work, and in a federation a new tradition of respecting minority rights may be started. (Ojala! as the Spanish say.)

I can hardly wait for the ticker-tape parade to start. Do you think the Aussies and the Desert Rats will come?
