Wayne Gretzky praised the efforts of U.S. President George W. Bush in the war against Iraq but shied away Monday from criticizing Canada's decision to stay out of the conflict.
"All I can say is the president of the United States is a great leader, I happen to think he's a wonderful man and if he believes what he's doing is right I back him 100 per cent," said Gretzky, in Calgary for a news conference for Ronald McDonald Children's Charities.
"If the president decides to go to war he must know more than we know, or we hear about. He must have good reason to go and we have to back that."

After Don Cherry came out pro-American on Saturday night on the HNIC broadcast, it's refreshing to see one of the most ubiquitously admired hockey figures in Canadian history to come out in support of George W. Bush and the American troops

"I guess we get it more in the United States because actors and singers -- they all think they know politics. I'm tired of watching people who are not in politics give their opinions." You tell them, Wayne.

hockey players are men and as such have contempt for the Cretin's craven and duplicitous government and the hen-pecking, petty reportage of the canadian media outlets.
he married american and lives here much of the year probably.
i bet he is ashamed of the majority of his countrymen! and i salute him for standing up to them. there is no doubt rising self-loathing in our (unfriendly) neighbors to the north--as there should be!!

Another Bush supporter in the hockey world!

Yesss!!! Grapes & Gretzky!!! This ought to quiet down a few of my Canadian relatives who are being force-fed a virulent anti-war, anti-American diet via the majority of their politicians and ALL of their TV news casts! First I had to listen to them crow about getting an NHL Hockey player from my favorite US team, now I have to listen to them jeer President Bush and this "war of aggression."
Well, my Toronto cousins may have gotten my beloved SJ Sharks Captain Owen Nolan in a recent trade to the Leafs, but I've got Grapes and Gretzsky's comments to keep me warm.

His character truly shines through. I'm pleased to see this and other articles now showing the Canadian population thinks its government should back the U.S., and three leaders (governors? I apologize for not knowing the correct term) of its provinces have taken issue with Chretien's anti-U.S. stand. One of them even wrote a letter to Paul Cellucci.

It's on my profile page, too. LOL!
What a classic -- I knew it was a winner as soon as I saw it on that NHL site a couple of years ago.

FWIW, Leetch's brother is a Green Beret who served in Afghanistan and is about to rotate back in.

What about Mess? Just one look at that guy and you know he's got to be one of ours. I'm not so sure about that. He may be a tough guy with a steely stare, but I've heard some pretty weird things about him from folks in both Edmonton and Vancounver.
