***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 6 - LIVE THREAD***
Multiple ^ | 25 March 2003 | Various

Posted on 03/24/2003 8:59:27 PM PST by An.American.Expatriate

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

These briefings make us very aware that the news folks have their story composed before they start, disregard all facts, disregard all they see, disregard normal intellectual deduction. It's called SPIN.

Helen was a perfect example yesterday when she asked whether the POWs would be treated under the rules of the Geneva convention. She knew damn well that the gitmo prisoners are not categorized as POWs but tried to lump them together.

Regarding media question. Units with embedded reporters are comfortable with them.

Q New York Magazine: Critique media (WOO HOO!!)

A: Media is a snapshot of what it sees at this point. Free societies have media. Bringing media to battlefield is historic. Immediacy in reporting. With this capability, is in a narrow view. Not had an adverse effect (hope he's referring to embeds)>

(Tom Fenton):Campaign designed to collapse, now you're in 6th day what do you have to say about that.

Anyone else read that pre-battle speech by the colonel in the Irish Guards? He told his men that his estimate of the campaign was 10 days to three weeks. Six days is nothing to worry about.

The sandstorms aren't a bad thing right now. It gives our guys a chance to sleep because offensive and defensive operations are going to be very limited.

That has been saved to my hard drive. Would you link it again for us here? Thanks.

That was so wrong. It looked like half of her was in black and white.

When I first saw it I was reminded of when Marge Simpson cut up the Chanel suit to join the Springfield Country Club. "The vest says lets have lunch, but the shorts say 'you're payin'.'"

Some of the media may be deliberately lying, but most of them are just ignorant. The media, for the most part, are very unsubstantial people.

I know I am violating a Standing Order by posting this link, and I hope that if I suffer any repercussions, they will be limited to the deletion of this post. ;)

I have found the ultimate--and most telling--DU thread ever. Consider this to be the corner of Stupidity Avenue and Idiot Drive.

Read it with pity, read it for humor.

I'm in Virginia. I just know my chili.

And I know the wind in Baghdad is fierce. I hate to think what it is doing to the oil fires.

I saw some poor slob waiting on a bus and it didn't look fun. I was deeply saddened for him.

Good point. First they have to clean the grit out of their eyes and then out of all the equipment. It will be a while before the big surge happens.

Don't forget "troubled."

For sure I am "troubled" by some of these reporters. LOL

Question: You show humanitarian meals ready to be distributed. What is your time frame?

Answer: You make a good point. We need security to get those rations out. We do put some rations out with our field units so if they see immediate need they are able to distribute.

We need these countries in the fight against terror. It does not benefit us to cut off the UN or France or Germany. (no matter how much they make us angry...)

WE did not cut of the Franco-Prussian Alliance - the cut themselves off! At any time prior to the outbreak of war, either one or both of these countries could have made amends by simply keeping thier months shut. Instead they chose the hypocritical path. We do not need fair weather friends. We also do not need thier like to come in after we do the dirty work and profit from the blood of our fallen (morally or financially)! The have chosen what they claim to be the moral high ground. Ater the war, we can not allow them to hide behind our success.

They need to be forced into the mediocre corner which they deserve.
