Saddam is using women and children as shields. So my question is this:
At what point do we determine that American losses or potential losses are at a level that warrants an abandonment of 'humane' warfare?

IMO, it will be a case by case basis. If the troops are using women and children as shield and shooting from behind them, we have no choice.

The women and children will be strapped with bombs and then be forced to run up to our military as "surrendering" civilians.
Catch-22: If they shoot to kill to protect the troops, or allow the child and women with the bombs strapped to their bellies to "surrender".
