Marine captain promoted posthumously

A Winslow family is mourning Jay Aubin, one of two Marines with Maine ties who died in Thursday's helicopter crash in Kuwait.

Aubin, a captain, had been slated for promotion, and President George W. Bush posthumously awarded him the rank of major.

His mother says she talked to Aubin for the last time six weeks ago, just before he was deployed. He said, "Mom, I want you to think and I want you to remember what I told you before, if something happens, I died doing what I love."

A full military service will be held in Winslow.

...posthumously awarded him the rank of major...

What a fine way to honor this hero. God bless his family.

Is there any way I can find out where I can send a card to his family?

When Earnhardt died racing a stupid stock car, hundreds of FReepers insisted he should be honored because he died "doing what he loved."

Any of those folks want to make an equivalence here?

OurMaine web feedback site is probably the best starting place I can think of - let me know if you do find something out and vice versa (sending them an email now).

Why is an 'equivalence' even necessary? Do you see something similar? While I do see the similarities I also see differences and they are staggering.

A mother and family who can be proud of their son because he was doing what he said he loved to do and they respected that desire. God bless them all.

Yes, I have no problems with seeing insurmountable differences myself.

It's just that when I read "he died doing what he loved to do" it put me in mind of the Earnhardt fans who continually made this claim after his death.

They called him a "hero."

At the time I made the point that racing a stock-car and getting splattered in a crash didn't make one a "hero," and that this allegation in fact impugned the TRUE heroes of the world.

This is a case in point.

God rest the Major.

Exactly the same reason I get thoroughly annoyed with those who think that guy who peddles his silly bicycle all over *france* is some kind of "hero". He's not. He's a guy who peddles his silly bicycle all over france.

This Major is a hero.

I understand what you're saying and agree. I don't know that I'd call Earnhardt a hero nor did I see people making that claim - but I agree with you. The Major is a true hero.

I disagree, respectfully, somewhat. Lance Armstrong serves as an inspiration and is a hero for overcoming a serious illness and striving to do what he has achieved. Maybe not to everyone but most definitely to some. Maybe, to some extent, that applies to Earnhardt as well. But in general neither compares to this Major.

Do a "Search This Page" for the word "hero" and you'll see what I mean.
