University if [sic] Maryland Student Scorns Death of Rachel Corrie SEATTLE (PalestineChronicle)- In the online edition of the University of Marylands school newspaper, The Diamondback student cartoonist, Daniel J Friedman published a caricature of the late Rachel Corrie, scorning her tragic death. Rachel Corrie, a 23 year old woman from Olympia, Washington was a senior at The Evergreen State College in Washington State. The young woman was a member of the International Solidarity Movement, and was staying in the home of a Palestinian pharmacist in the town of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. - While trying to protect the familys home, an Israeli bulldozer ran over Corrie twice, fracturing her arms, legs and skull. Corrie died the same day in a hospital in Gaza. The caricature presents a bulldozer with a young girl sitting in front of it. The caption below reads: From American Heritage Dictionary Stupidity: 1. The quality or condition of being stupid 2. A stupid act, remark or idea 3. Sitting in front of a bulldozer to protect a gang of terrorists
The cartoon has sparked widespread outrage, with people and organizations criticizing Friedman for not only disrespecting the memory of Corrie, but for making the generalization that all Palestinians are terrorists. Several organizations are calling on the public to send their thoughts to the Editors of the newspaper, as well as the ombudsman. You can view the cartoon at http://www.inform.umd.edu/News/Diamondback/archives/2003/03/18/cartoon.html If you would like to contact the papers ombudsman Etan Horowitz, he can be emailed at ombudsman@dbk.umd.edu You can call with your comments to the Diamondback newsroom at: (301) 314-8200 Or you can contact the editor-in-chief, Jay Parsons at: parsons@dbk.umd.edu

Typical college editorial cartoon: Bad artwork, unsubtle, derivative. But I love it anyway, since it pisses off the Palestinians.

It is just too bad that Rachel Corrie did not have more sense, and we just can not help that.

I'm sure the college liberals are getting ready for a full-blown tizzy fit. Freedom of speech is only for them, not their critics.

It's too bad when a young girl ends up like that. Blame her parents, blame her educators, but at least some of the blame falls on her.
Anyone who goes to Israel to offer aid and assistance to the terrorists who are busily blowing up women and children suffers from a serious moral disease. We do have free will, we make our own choices, and she pretty much chose her fate.

Yeah, she was protecting a "family home" that just happened to be a sniper position and terrorist hideout.

If she was fair minded and REALLY wanted to do something constructive, she could have gotten a job driving a bus in Israel. She could have worn a vest that said "Human Shield" and put her life on the line for a good cause.

We do have free will, we make our own choices, and she pretty much chose her fate.I agree 100%. But let us not forget that, in the end, her fate was sealed because of something far, far stupider: She wouldn't get out of the way of a moving bulldozer. That's not immorality, that's looney tunes.
Personally, I agree with a lot of the people that have argued that her real disease was Arrogentia. She thought that, as an American, she was untouchable; that she could harass and enrage and taunt whoever she wanted because, regardless of how much she hated America, she believed her US citizenship imparted upon her a sort of Harry Potteresque Magic Seal. To which I can only say: You LOSE, Rachel! And you won't be spinning the Big Wheel in a few minutes, either.

Dumb parents, dumb kid, dumb teachers. Most of Corrie's teachers should go Israel and teach hands on by example, such as:
Getting Squished By Bulldozers 101.
