If there were to be any protests outside Fort Bliss tomorrow, it would take more than a few police to restrain their friends (and others who knew them and the unit) from taking out their anger on the protesters. There is a time for free speech, but this time and place are not it. No, there won't be protests, but I'd bet anything, there will be a vigil, flowers and candles.
(I tear-up every time I think about this; I was an officer in country in Viet Nam, and I know how I would have felt if this had happened to members of my unit or to personnel from my base. My anger would be very close to the breaking point. I imagine Fort Bliss commanders are issuing orders and reminding troops how to cope with this news. God bless them all.)
God Bless them. But it won't protect the 5 o'clock "let's tie traffic up" protesters in our city. There will be hell to pay if they show up tommorrow. (And a good time to be a dentist)
