BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 23 (UPI) -- A Lebanese satellite channel, LBC TV reports from Baghdad that an American pilot was captured in Baghdad, Sunday. The station showed images of dozens of Iraqis rushing to a bridge overlooking the Tigris river to capture a pilot whose plane was shot down.
The bridge is close to the neighborhood of Sanaka leading to the information ministry.
LBC is saying a U.S. pilot was captured.
The event took place at the time Baghdad was being bombarded and the bridge was crowded with cars and people. Big clouds of black smoke was also seen billowing over Baghdad.
Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based satellite network, quoted witnesses as saying two western pilots were seen coming down in parachutes over Baghdad, and military men were seen searching for them in boats on the river. Soldiers with machineguns are screening the shores of the river. Hundreds of civilians and military men were involved in the search.

WASHINGTON - Some American soldiers are missing in the fighting in Iraq (news - web sites) and possibly being held as prisoners, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Sunday. He acknowledged a report of a missing allied aircraft but U.S. defense officials said there was no evidence of that.
Rumsfeld said he could not provide any information about a missing aircraft. In Baghdad, security officers searched the banks of the Tigris River, apparently looking for one or more pilots who may have bailed out of a downed plane.
Asked what he could say about missing pilots, Rumsfeld replied, "Nothing." He suggested that the search in Baghdad was staged.
"There has been a report of an aircraft missing," the secretary acknowledged on NBC's "Meet the Press. "I don't want to speculate because I simply don't know."

Roger that! I couldn't even see a floating paracute in the water anywhere. It's tough to move a wet parachute.
