I have been praying for God to remove the evil leaders from power in this country, regardless of party, and those around the world ever since impeached President Clinton proved to be a lying traitor and rapist. I leave the method of removal entirely up to the Creator.

Oh I know there are liberals in Binghamton...but I was arguing That the vote tallies in the Broome Tioga region are strongly region are strongly Republican while the downstate region and Ithaca tend to tally liberal.

I grew up in Binhamton, going to North High School. I know the people and culture. We were very unhappy when in 1990 Cuomo when he created the then 26th district that he lumped us in with the very liberal catskill region which had a greater population, in stead of hooking us up with a more western district that included Elmira and a very pro Republican part of the state. Redistricting has happened again and at least my home in Tioga county is now out of Hinchey's district by an even stranger gerry mander that put my part of Tioga county(not all of Tioga) into S. Boelert's camp(which really did us conservatives no big favor).

But you for-get that the right to life candidates and Randall Terry took 10000 votes away from Moppert....it was not a liberal win by anymeans but a split in the Republican/conservative right to life votes that allowed Hinchey to win. It happened again in 1996,1998, and 2000.

Terry wasn't running in 1994, but it's true there was another Right to Life candidate who got a few thousand votes. Frankly I can't recall if those votes represented the margin of victory.

Because the right to lifers(I'm pro-life but not necessarily a one issue voter) split the conservative vote. It happened again in 1996, 1998. amd 2000. It was especially bitter in 1998 when the Randall Terry campaign raised the spectre of child abuse allegations against the Republican candidate. I lost all respect for Terry and have looked askance at some of his followers (who I knew personally) after that. I didnot like the republican candidate for other reasons(RINO reasons) and voted for Hinchey on the Liberal line just because I didn't want the Democrats to get the credit. I voted conservative in 2000 and 2002(but not for Boelert).

The Right-to-Life candidate in 1994, Thomas F. Kovach did indeed take the votes Moppert needed for a win. Kovach received 4,772, far greater than the 1,248 votes that separated Hinchey and Moppert. Aside from 1992 when Moppert previously ran, there hasn't been a close race since. Randall Terry's run didn't adversely effect the outcome in '98 (when Hinchey received 62%). When Moppert ran again in 2000, it wasn't even much of a contest anymore and Hinchey won in a landslide again (62-37%).

Thanks for the excellent 411.

I would point out that it should not be assumed that all of the RTL votes were Moppert's for the taking. Many of those voters were undoubtedly white ethnic Catholics with a tradition of voting Dem. Others were motivated to come to the polls to vote RTL, and if there had been no RTL candidate might well have stayed at home.

Still, but for the RTL candidate, Moppert certainly would have had a good chance of winning in '94.

"Thanks for the excellent 411."

Sure thing.

I would tend to think Moppert probably would've won, by maybe 1,000 or so. But, saying that, I also believe he would probably have lost reelection in '96 by probably a few percentage points, assuming Hinchey sought a rematch (you'll recall that when Dole abandoned the N.E. in that election to focus his efforts elsewhere, we lost a number of seats from Maine to NJ).

Sorry. I checked the Progressive Caucus home page just for laughs, and it seems that they have tried to shut it down. For the membership of the Democrat Socialists (most of whom comprise the Progressive Caucus) check: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/746222/posts
