1998 LOTT CRITICISM OF CLINTON -- The Rest of the Story

Charley Rangel, a senior member of Congress and, Lord help us, a committee chairman if the RATS ever get back into power, has made it clear that he "supports the troops" but not the president. The greatest anger and hatred for our president comes from Rangel's fellow members of the American-hating Black Caucus.

Defenders of Rangel will cite that Trent Lott, our weak-kneed former Senate Leader, was critical of Bill Clinton when he was dropping missiles on Iraq in 1998.

For those who forgot, the missiles were dropped on the eve of impeachment. Lott opposed the air assault on suspected Iraqi chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons sites (i.e. an aspirin factory), because he thought the attacks were ineffective. It was not enough action against Hussein.

And now for what the left wants everyone to really forget. For months Lott had criticized the Clinton administration for failing to take more aggressive steps to topple Saddam Hussein. Under pressure from Congress, Clinton enacted the Iraq Liberation Act in October, 1998, which earmarked $8 million to support Iraqi political opposition. In a letter to Clinton, the Senate Republicans complained that he had only spent $58,000 of that money.

“I will support serious and sustained action but will oppose action that does not accomplish our larger strategic goal,” Lott said.

There is the rest of the story. We now have troops on the ground in harm's way. The America and Bush haters are out in the street. Like Ellen RATner, they want the war to go badly. The Rangel refusal to support the president and the Lott criticism are only equivalent in the Bizarro world of the political left.

Thank goodness we have a commander in chief who doesn't loathe the military, who understands the nature of evil, who doesn't want to lower our strength and submit to the U.N., who does not have an intern service him under the desk while on the phone discussing the lives of servicemen, who doesn't try to use the Sailors and Soldiers Civil Relief Act to avoid facing a sexual harassment trial, and who is loved and respected by those in the military.

If it's all about oil, why didn't we just stay in Iraq the first time around. Or, since Kuwait is number 3 on the list for oil reserves, why not take them over? Better yet, Saudi Arabia has the world's largest reserve of oil. If it were really about oil we'd go get it.

I will agree that they ate him like they were cannibals, however, I have no love lost for limp wristed Lott. The RATS used him like a punching bag.

Trent Lott refusing to have a real trial just because the politics of the situation didn't mean much of a chance at a conviction was one of the most despicable abuses of a lack of leadership I have ever seen.

"I've gotten over it, but I'll never forget it."

That sword seems to cut both ways.

The treatment of Trent Lott after his unremarkable remarks at Strom Thurmond's party...so unremarkable in fact that when he said virtually the same thing two years earlier (here) there was apparently not one word of disapproval - not from Dennis Hastert sitting next to Thurmond, not from any of those standing around (including the tall black man in the back row), not from anyone watching the proceedings on C-Span, and certainly not from anyone on FR that I can recall - if the 'pubs could so easily sell out someone whom they themselves had elected MR three terms straight, I shudder to think what they'd do to rank-and-file voters if circumstances were right......
