We know what it is it. It is the SARS virus. But, to which virus family it belongs, we don't know yet," he added.
Some researchers believe it is a new type of paramyxovirus, but studies from other labs suggest it may belong to another virus family.

This is rather large news. I refrained from posting in Breaking News because of JR's request the other night.
Just thought you should know, in case you feel it warrants Breaking News status
Thank you for your work...

Yes it is

Seems to me as long as we do not overwhelm the medical capacity of this country we are ok. Care needs to be extended to countries less fortunate for all our sakes.

Can you explain to me (not to be a wisea**, just ignorant of these things) why this is good news? Probably a very stupid question but I put it forward anyway.

The virus being isolated is good news,at first they didn't even know if it was a virus or a bacteria.

Not at all,
Once we know this critters name and it's heritage we can target our work.
This little bug is about to see what happens when you open a very large, family sized can of Whoop Ass...

Thanks for the ping. Now we have a place to start unraveling the bug's DNA and knitting a vaccine/cure/treatment.

Third SARS death in Ontario
Last Updated Sat, 22 Mar 2003 14:11:22
TORONTO - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has killed a third person in Ontario, the province's chief medical officer said Saturday.
The patient died late Friday night, Dr. Colin D'Cuna said.
SARS is the mysterious pneumonia that has claimed three lives in Ontario, and at least seven more worldwide, not counting deaths in China where the disease originated. Chinese officials have not provided information on deaths in their country.
To: Mother Abigail
has any of the 14 or so persons suspected to have it in the US died?
To: riri
Now that they have successfully identified and isolated the virus, they can work on control and cure.

So, the important piece isn't the test but that they have isolated the virus making a test possible.

It will be interesting to see if ribavirin has any effect.

Test and slaughter, isolation and quarantine, ring quarantine, or let the virus run its course. Take your pick.
