WASHINGTON -- Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday warned about a serious flaw in almost every version of its popular Windows software that could allow hackers to seize control of a person's computer when victims read e-mails or visit Web sites.
Microsoft assessed the problem's urgency as critical, its highest level, and urged customers to download a free repairing patch immediately from its Web site, www.microsoft.com/security.

This does not sound good, especially in these troubled times.

War developments are too important for me to Linux rant today. That, and Al Gore's appointment to Apple's board has left me with the feeling that I shouldn't be throwing stones from within a glass house today.

Al Gore is on Apple's board?
So much for me switching over to the Mac anytime soon.
*grits teeth and goes back to Windows for the long haul*

I'm not in the mood to register. Can you post the URL at Microsoft for the fix?

I am shocked, shocked I tell you, at such a development.
Wonder what B2K's excuse this week will be.

I knew it was only a matter of time before
this "study" was proven to be total rubbish.

Never mind. It's already been posted in the last hour or so at the MS Windows Update site. I just installed it. Here's the description from my installation history. Possibly a different fix has been posted for Win2K and WinXP:
814078: Security Update (Microsoft Jscript version 5.6, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0)

Here it is. The download takes only a few seconds, you do, however, have to re-start your computer after the download.

There are three engineers in a car; an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer and a Microsoft engineer. Suddenly the car just stops by the side of the road, and the three engineers look at each other wondering what could be wrong. The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the electronics of the car and trying to trace where a fault might have occurred. The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggests that maybe the fuel is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere. Then, the Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about anything, comes up with a suggestion: "Why don`t we close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the windows again, and maybe it`ll work !?"

When *don't* you have to restart your computer with Windoze?
If Half-Life worked in Linux, I'm sure I'd have it on my home machine by now...
