INDICT:Bringing Iraqi war criminals to justice

INDICT was established in late 1997 to campaign for the creation of an ad hoc International Criminal Tribunal - similar to those established for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda - to try leading members of the Iraqi regime on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including genocide and torture. The campaign was launched in the House of Commons and in the US Senate and remained dependent on voluntary donations and assistance until it was awarded a financial grant through the Iraq Liberation Act, passed by the US Congress in December 1998, which allocated funds to various Iraqi opposition groups and specifically allocated money for war crimes issues

KEYWORDS:
Saddam Hussein's regime continues to violate the human rights of the Iraqi people. The regime's contempt for its own citizens, its neighbours and the international community has increasingly isolated Iraqi society. Saddam Hussein, members of his family and other Iraqi officials have committed genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture. INDICT seeks to bring leading members of the regime to justice in national courts or before an international tribunal.

I've got a suggestion - keep quiet until the war is either over or winding down. Trumpeting that key Iraqi officials should face a war tribunal independent of what goes down in this war will give them a disincentive to surrender.

No thank you.

An American military tribunal will do quite nicely. We don't need to codify international courts as superceding national sovereignty.

The US should do to Iraq what they did to Germany and Japan. End all military. Leave a police force. Have the country declared neutral and defended by the UN if attacked. No artillary, fighter aircraft etc. Make the country build it's self without a military.

Do not send Sadamn to Belgium or the ICC. Send him to Gitmo. Let Bush Sr. be the lead judge. Problem solved.
