Fiji soldiers embroiled in Iraq strategy
Fijian soldiers serving with the United Nations in Iraq are among those being evacuated from Baghdad ahead of the expiry of a 48-hour ultimatum by United States President George W Bush.
They are being moved to Oman.
Fijian troops serving with the UN in Kuwait have also been pulled out and moved to Bangladesh.
However, more than 200 of the 1,500 Fijian soldiers serving with various units of the British army have taken up positions in Kuwait ahead of a possible attack on Iraq by US-led coalition forces.

Fiji is a great place for a vacation. I'm sure that they have products that we can use that aren't French owned.

It's not Fiji that has joined the Coalition. In similar fashion it would be wrong to put up a Nepalese flag and say that because Gurkha's are serving in the British Army then Nepal had just joined the Coalition. The UK has struggled over the last couple of years to fill places in its all volunteer military. A campaign was implemented to recruit from such nations as Fiji and others such as St Helena, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. A run down of nationalities recruited and serving from 2001 are as follows Australia 61, Fiji 373, India 12, Jamaica 34, Kenya 7, Malta 6, Canada 62, New Zealand 51,Trinidad and Tobago 9, Pakistan 6, Zimbabwe 45, South Africa 70.
