Don't forget Bella_Bru and Pan_Yans Wife. Two more who have consistently brutalized this family here on FR.

It has just been disturbing reading the comments by the "oh she went with him and she wanted to stay with him", people. (and my comment that is putting it lightly... I cannot believe some of the crap that spews from these people)

I will retract my suspicions regarding the Smart case. Yes, it is awful that she was kept in a hole, and raped. Yes, the perp is sick and deserves everything that is coming to him.
But--and this might make some people angry--I still find fault with the family, particularly with Ed Smart.
They did all the media-savvy things in alerting the public about their daughter's disappearance.
Ed Smart and his brother were popular guests on cable television talk shows. Why, one could easily come away with the impression that these men rather enjoyed the attention, regardless of how tragic the situation appeared.
However, when the tough guys get tough, and when they finally charge Mitchell with his crimes--all the crimes that he committed--Ed Smart suddenly asks the public for privacy.
Amber Alert Activist? Does anyone else think that this outburst by Ed Smart on the very day he is reunited with his daughter was a normal reaction???
I still have problems here with this case, but I guess I am in a small minority. I suppose my opinions are tainted by my complete lack of trust in the broadcast media, and that they were so willing to make the Smart family into a kind of mini-series.

This was a clear case of child endangerment in which Ed and Lois Smart placed the welfare and safety of their minor children at extreme riskThat's a huge load of BS.

Sounds like some of the reasoning used by some FR posters.

What if the public defender they give her doesn't exactly have her best interest in mind. And just suppose he leaves her alone long enough for SLC authorities to threaten her. She apparently is not a strong willed woman. It can't take much to break her down.

I still have problems here with this case, but I guess I am in a small minority. Yes you are.
Attacking the victim is not very popular, is it, but it seems you can't let it go.
If you could think deep thoughts, you'd realize the ONLY reason Elizabeth Smart is back with her family is that her family used the media to find her. You may not trust the broadcast media, but Smart's family didn't trust the local police. They went on TV as much as they could to publicize the case. And you know what? That media presence allowed two couples to spot "Emmanual" and call it in to the cops. Now the Smart family's problem is turning off the media attention and that's problematic. How to you suggest they handle it?

You potentially expose your children to itinerant criminal drifters every time you let them out of the house.
A handyman working in the neighborhood, the guy mowing the lawn across the street, the garbagemen collecting the trash, some dude driving slowly by in a pickup truck, the meter-reader, the mailman...
Any of them could be on the lookout for little victims.
Remember that Polly Klaas was abducted by some guy that had seen her playing in the neighborhood while he was driving around, and watched her to make sure what house she'd be in.
He broke in and took her right from under everyone's nose, and killed her.
Meanwhile this Mitchell demon worked on the roof of the Smart home WITH ED SMART right there working with him. Five hours. That was all.
Those of you who are willing to condemn them for this are just petty. This is a wicked world. I defy you to show me that you are any more safe than the Smarts were, than the Klaases, than the Walshes.

It takes a big person to admit they're wrong, thanks. Elizabeth has a long road ahead of her, but I am praying she will get through it. She's got good family support, a good group of friends, and church support. And God's love.

Yes. And the fact is that the majority of sexual abuse with children is done, not by strangers, but by people who live with the children or who have regular access to them.
It's very unusual for a stranger to sexually assault a child. It does happen, but rarely. Most cases are done by someone known and trusted by the family. Many are within the family itself.
Perhaps the Smarts should have checked before hiring this person, but they did not. Perhaps they wanted to help someone earn a little money instead of begging. I don't know. But, not every homeless person is a potential kidnapper or rapist.
There is risk everywhere in our society. Danger can come from all sides, even from those you think you know and trust.

She led police to the hole, where a rope and a knife were found that have been forensically matched to her bedroom. I ask again. Where is a link to this? I have checked almost every news story I can find(even FNC, your quoted source) and none indicate anything has been "forensically matched". Did you just hear someone say that? I only ask because people were claiming over the weekend the two had been charged, and that obviously wasn't the case. It hadn't been long enough. They have "forensically" tested materials already? If this is true, it does physically place Mitchell in the house.
To: Doc Savage
Where, when, and how did the Smarts ever practice child endangerment?
Yes, they hired people without background checks. You never did that? Never called up a handyman in the Help Wanted ads to mow your lawn?
Never stopped with your kids in tow to give a buck to a poor person?
Never forgot to lock a door? Never forgot to set the alarm?
Do you even have kids?
These are good, loving, conscientious parents. They, like their daughter, were victims of a perverted sociopath.

I agree. Elizabeth has shown marvelous survival skills. That she was rescued with her sweet smile intact shows the depth of the love she received and shared with her family for 14 years prior to her abduction.
