LACI PETERSON CASE
Bay search suspended
Searchers in the Laci Peterson case returned to the San Francisco Bay on Monday morning, but the boats were pulled off the water by early afternoon because of high winds and choppy water. "It was pretty touchy out there," said Detective Doug Ridenour, spokesman for the Modesto Police Department. Investigators have been searching the area near Brooks Island since last week, but windy weather has hampered efforts since Thursday. Laci Peterson was reported missing Dec. 24. Her husband, Scott Peterson, said he was fishing off Brooks Island that day. Scott Peterson is not a suspect, nor has he been cleared in the case, which police are now classifying as a homicide investigation.
an opinion piece:
Left heavy-hearted
It was with heartfelt grief I read that the police now believe Laci Peterson is deceased. A life filled with promise gone from the earth.
Her family's sorrow must know no bounds. It is my hope they find peace in knowing that if their child has passed from this life, she will be safe in the arms of the Lord forever.
Law enforcement officials have shown great compassion for Peterson and her family. My family will pray the perpetrator of this evil will be caught and justice will be served.
This case has touched the lives of many across the nation, and our thoughts and prayers will be with Laci's family until this is resolved.

Body found after car fire put out in orchard

(Published Friday, March 7, 2003, 9:23 AM)
A body was found Thursday inside a burning car in an orchard near Parlier, but sheriff's officials said they could not determine the cause of death.
The victim apparently drove into the orchard about 3:30 p.m. from an area near South Avenue and continued north along an asphalt and dirt road.
It will be up to Fresno County coroner's investigators to determine whether the death was suicide, homicide or an auto accident.
The call came in as a vehicle fire in an orchard. But after Fresno County firefighters extinguished the blaze about 4 p.m., they found the victim dead in the driver's side of the vehicle.
The car, believed to be a late-1980s Ford Taurus, was found 50 to 60 feet west of the dirt and asphalt road, among rows of trimmed fruit trees between Zediker and Riverbend roads.

PRESS CONFERENCE ON LACI'S DISAPPEARANCE
Laci Peterson
MODESTO, CA - There was a press conference on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 2:30 p.m., at the Modesto Police Department, 600 10th Street, in the Public Meeting Room regarding the Laci Peterson investigation.
"As the investigation has progressed we have increasingly come to believe that Laci Peterson is the victim of a violent crime. This investigation began as a missing person case and we all were hopeful that Laci would return home safely. However, we have come to consider this a homicide case. Based on this belief an additional reward is now being offered for information that leads to her location and recovery," said lead investigator Detective Craig Grogan, Homicide Unit.
Kim Petersen, executive director of the Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, announced today that donors from an earlier reward for Laci's safe return have approved the transfer of $50,000 dollars to be used for information directly leading to the location and recovery of Laci Peterson. In addition to the reward, Laci's family urged the public to provide information to police in order to locate Laci.
Our tip line has received many calls ranging from legitimate tips to people expressing their opinions and feelings. We have logged and processed the calls and they are all forwarded to an investigator. Investigators then review the tips.
The majority of the 8,000 plus tips have not received return calls. If the caller only left minimal information or the investigator feels further information is needed, there will be follow-up. On those tips where the caller is detailed and thorough, the person is generally not called back. No tips have been ignored. We will continue to seek tips from anyone who feels they have information which could lead to this case being solved.
The public is encouraged to call the police hotline at 209-342-6166 to provide any information leading to location and recovery of Laci Peterson.
POLICE REQUEST MEDIA'S ASSISTANCE
POLICE REQUEST MEDIA'S ASSISTANCE
Laci Peterson
Modesto, CA-The media satellite trucks stationed in the area of the Covena neighborhood are causing a noise disturbance for neighbors. Citizens are also reporting to police that media personnel and equipment make it difficult to drive down their street or get into their homes. Modesto Police are asking media producers to remove their satellite trucks and personnel from the residential areas impacting the Covena neighborhood.
Our policy continues to be that when a significant or breaking development occurs, the Modesto Police Media Relations office will notify the news agencies via advisory and allow minimum of four hours to respond to a press conference. We would like to maintain this understanding. We need the producer's assistance in managing their staff, equipment, and satellite trucks to minimize the impact on our community. "If necessary, we will strictly enforce the applicable vehicle codes using both state and local laws to preserve our community," said Roy Wasden, Chief of Police.
There are no known immediate developments, nor do we foresee any significant breaks or arrest in the disappearance of Laci Peterson. It continues to be our policy not to respond to media rumors and speculation about the ongoing investigation.
