Appoint State BOE
The old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not apply to the State Board of Education. The board is broken, as it often is hamstrung by ideological divides and agendas. And the Senate Education Committee needs to vote this week on how to fix it.
Several reform proposals are before the committee. Our preference is creating a governor-appointed Board of Education, similar to the Board of Regents. Such a change would elevate the board's stature and the quality of its members.
Restructuring would take a constitutional amendment, requiring the approval of two-thirds of the Legislature and a majority of voters. That's a difficult hurdle. But for the sake of the board's important mission, it's one that we need to leap.

Is this just a ploy to rid the board of conservatives? I'd like feedback on this.

Elected is better than appointed in (pretty much) every case.

That's what I thought.
As it is now, the board is evenly divided between liberals and conservatives. They fight a lot and, since there are ten members, they hit a stalemate frequently. They could have a tie-breaker person break the ties just as the VP does in the U.S. Senate. I wouldn't have a problem with that. But if the current board had been governor appointed, there wouldn't be a single conservative voice in the mix. That would not only be a disaster, it would be a dishonest representation of the population.

Kathleen (Clone of Hillary) Sebelius would stack it so full of leftist NEA pukes that it would make your head spin.
Not that Bill (RINO) Graves would have done any different.

Of course it is a ploy to return the State Board of Education, to the idiots who never met a tax hike and think that what constitutes an education is
"diversity celebrations, free lunchs to all who are hungry, free after school programs (commonly referred to as babysitting), etc. Another disgusted resident.

Excuse me, RP, but according to the Capital-Journal, there are no liberals on the SBOE. There are five "moderates" and five ultra-conservatives.

Apparently at the Capital-Journal, they are utilizing the Marxist-Leninist slider-scale ruler of judging ideology, which seems to be utilized at many of our finest (sic) media outlets from coast to coast.

Before the election, there were a lot of people saying that the Sec. of Agriculture should be elected, not appointed. After Sebelius won, they quit saying that.
It must have something to do with who will be doing the appointing.

Another disgusted resident. It's bad enough anyway. The change would be disastrous.

It must have something to do with who will be doing the appointing. Ding ding ding ding ding.....we have a winner folks. Exactly, Steel Eye.
To: RAT Patrol
Amen to that. If the governor appointed this person, they are beholden to the governor. Bad news for the tax payer.
To: Sunshine Sister
Exactly. If liberals want dominance over the school board they should have to earn it the old-fashioned way: Take their case to the people and turn out the vote.
If the social liberals succeed at this little game then conservatives shouldn't have to pay school taxes. No representation, no tax.
To: RAT Patrol
of course it is; we must fight this

Axel, you'd make a much better Governor than I, LOL!

rw, since you're a better writer than I am (and I'm always over my limit at the Wichita Eagle anyway) it would be great if you submitted a letter to the Eagle on this issue (if you have time). Pretty please?
...or anyone else, for that matter... They're good about printing letters that disagree with them.
