Ex-Sen. Moynihan in Critical Condition
Yahoo News ^ | 3/17/03

WASHINGTON - Former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., is in critical condition at a Washington area hospital, suffering from an infection after his appendix burst, his assistant said Monday.

Moynihan, who turned 76 on Sunday, is in the intensive care unit of the Washington Hospital Center, said Vicki Bear Dodson. His appendix ruptured last Monday.

"He was doing well until late Thursday, early Friday, when an infection set in," said Dodson. "Unfortunately, there's been no change in his condition over the weekend."

Moynihan has suffered a series of health setbacks in recent months. He was hospitalized in January for an intestinal disorder and again soon after for a back injury.

Now a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Moynihan was first elected to the Senate in 1976 and finished his fourth term in 2000. Fellow legislators named Manhattan's new federal courthouse in his honor.

I met Senator M once in the lobby of a well know hotel in London in the mid eighties. He was hammered (smashed)!! I think he said he was waiting for a cab. I pointed out the cabs are outside, senator. Oh yes he replied and stumbled forward.

And yet, there are plenty right here on this thread who appear to revere him because he purports to be jolly, has a big red drunk's nose, gladhands reporters and other political hacks and mentioned single-parent families a hundred years ago. And, oh yeah, he also talked about Socialist Insecurity and did absolutely nothing to free us from that monstrosity.

In other words, he parties a lot and yacks a lot, while wasting taxpayer money.

Not much mention of his gun-grabbing, babykilling, Huge Stupid Government ethics, though. "He's just a wonderful, honest, ethical man."

Feh.

I thing so, Clinton rejected it in '00, he wanted it as an election issue for Goron...was it Sen. Moynihan (D-NY) or Sen. Breau (D-LA)?

at an age when such surgery is not a serious matter

All surgery is a serious matter at any age. Opening up the gut is even more risky.

I'd bet it would be that Sen. Moynihan held Hillary in the same regard as what 99.99% of FReepers do

I'd join you in that bet!

Daniel Patrick Moynahan - I hope you have a speedy recovery. I don't like to see anybody in discomfort.

However, Moynahan is a pompous, left-wing liberla who tried his level best to undermine the Second AMendment.

but he's an honorable one. A good honest man doing what he thought was best for our contry.

I wouldn't describe ANYBODY who didn't have the spine to stand up for the right-to-life for the innocent unborn as "honorable".

Well...You're a hardcore idealog. There is no reasoning with your kind. It's why you're dismissed so often.

Like in this case.

He wasn't on my "if I get cancer list", so I wish him well.

He's a type like Tip O'Neil, the end of an era.

If it was the Klansman I could get some real bile worked up.

oh my. pat moynahan has been a true statesman, even though it sometimes required him to walk a very narrow path to maintain some dignity in the face of democrat party pressures.

Sorry, I can not concur.

Moynihan has long been one of the looniest "ban 'em all" gun control nuts in Congress. There was nothing at all "dignified" or respectable in his rants and attempts to destroy our Constitutional rights.

I disagree. He rolled over for the Clintons and did not vote to convict in the Senate. He is truly filth.

Actually I'm a 37 year old student. I have an associates degree but it's worthless. I'm going after a biology degree. I was out of school for several years.

Sen. Moynihan and Nunn could be the last of the honorable democrats in the US Senate who had a real voice in their party.

Correction:

Sen. Moynihan and Nunn could be the last of the honorable democrats honorable Democrat in the US Senate who had a real voice in their his party.

Nunn showed his true colors when he use falsified charges against former senator Tower to prevent him from becoming secretary of defense. He also voted against the use of force against Iraq in 1991 mostly for personal political purposes. He was also beginning to change his position of abortion; personally, I think the abortion issue should be decided by state legislatures.

The vote and change of position on abortion were I think intended as a way to ingraciate himself with the left wing of the DemocRAT party in anticipation of a run for the Presidency in 1992. As a moderate to conservative Democrat from a southernstat who had made some concessions to the left wing of his party, he would have been in a strong position to run against President Bush (41) in 1992. The overwhelming success of the military aspects of Desert Storm crushed any chance of Nunn or any of the other senators who voted agains the authorization of force agains Iraq getting the DemocRAT nomination for president in 1992 or ever. It was the self-destruction of most senate DemocRATS on the Iraq issue in 1991 that allowed Bill Clinton to run in a DemocRAT field made up of mostly lightweights in 1992.

The rejection of former Senator Tower also came back to bite the DemocRATS in the butt. While there are quite a number of Republicans who might have had problems with Tower, the campaign by key senators to reject him as Secretary of Defense was repugnant and reprehensible. It is well documented that Senator Tower had had a drinking problem and had been a philanderer; however, I have never seen those qualities disquailify a DemocRAT. In particular, an allegation was made that Senator Tower had made phsyical advances towards a female enlisted person while visiting a military base while he chaired the Senate Armed Forces Committee. It was later shown that the person who made the allegation about seeing Senator Tower had been treated in a mental institution, and that Senator Tower had not even been in the state where that military base was located on the date when the episode was supposed to have occurred. Regardless of the proved falsity of the charges against Senator Tower, Senator Heflin said that the "appearance of impropriety" made Senator Tower unfit to serve as Secretary of Defense. Of course nine years later, the DemocRATS were defending the depraved actions of President Clinton which were proved to be true.

As far as biting the DemocRATS in the butt is concerned. Nunn's "Borking" of Senator Tower created opportunities for other Republicans to rise. President Bush (41) nominated the House minority whip, Dick Cheney as Secretary of Defense. Cheney's prominence as Secretary of Defense during Desert storm lead to his nomination and election as Vice President of the United States. The vacancy in the House minority whip position led to the election of Newt Gingrich to that position. I have to admit Gingrich has his own personal short comings, but his leadership, vision, and strategy lead to the Republican takeover of both the House and Senate in 1994.

I'm sorry to say I think he's dead man now. I doubt a "scholarly" man like Moynihan has the physical stamina at his age to survive a burst appendix.

Thanx. I'm not really a fan of Moynihan. Besides, I was born on the west coast. This summer, the only required class that is offered is 2nd semester physics. The bio course, genetics, won't be offered because the teacher says not enough students signed up last year to make it cost-effective. It's not worth it to me to just take physics this summer or to go to another university in another city just for the summer. All the gen-ed courses are offered in the summer, but I'm a junior and don't need them now. I did get a C in my art class (at a different college). The teacher was a liberal whacko. Hopefully I'm not one of those who'll fail. I got a B on my last bio test, but the teacher said there were several D's and F's. The only course I'm having trouble with is physics, because it's boring.
