Peace Rally in Wimberly Tx 3/16/03
3/16/03 | The Bat Lady

I freeped the Peace Rally in tiny Wimberly Tx tonight. It was a candlelight vigil and I have never met nicer people.

I got there about 30 minutes early and there was no one at the designated place. I did see 3 people walking around whose car had a bumper sticker that said "War with Iraq... NO" They left since nothing was going on.

Finally at 15 minutes till trucks and vehicles started arriving. The "organizer" I assume, pulled his truck in and opened the back gate and raised an American flag. Since I couldn't be sure which side he was on, I stayed in my car. Then more people gathered and several people had American flags. I was heartened. MOVEON must be spinning at their site. These were Americans who just want PEACE.

I went 1st as a reporter for FR. I asked why they were there and EACH person replyed "Peace"

I asked what other solution they would recommend. #1 answer was "war is not the answer, peace is the answer, we must explore all other options." #2 solution "diplomacy is the answer" I asked how long should we talk? She said that other conflicts have been solved w/o war... I asked which ones? GET THIS... Russia. We solved that w/o war... I kept with my cover of reporter and didn't explain how we did that. More stories with bumps.

So I'm talking to a young girl and she said that we should respect the UN. We should respect Iraq and they will be better.

I asked an older gentleman why he was there and he said that he didn't think even ONE American life was worth getting into war with Iraq. That Justice will prevail and eventually all wrongs will be righted.

I asked if the Iraqi's who are being tortured, raped and executed could wait for the time to come for Justice and he said that he didn't want to have ONE American die to get rid of Saddam.

Then I started talking to 2 other ladies and THIS IS THE BEST ANSWER OF THE EVENING...

They said it is like the 100th monkey. And the other lady agreed, I explained that I didn't know the story so they said that there was an island where all the monkeys dug up sweet potatos... OK I'M REALLY CONFUSED AT THIS POINT. They said that the 100th one started washing his sweet potatos and THEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, monkeys began washing their sweet potatos.

A cute story if true (PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME IF THIS IS TRUE) but I had to ask why this applyed to the "Peace rally"... THOUGHT TRANSFERANCE!!!

If they have these rally's all over the world, it will cause peace thru thought transferance..... OOOOOOOOKKKKKK!

I also asked those 2 ladies if they were familar with MoveOn and they didn't have a clue what kind of organization that was. I explained that they should check it out, but keeping with a reporter's job didn't go into it at that time.

More on that later

They were the only ones who asked who I was with and I told them FR so they will probably check it out. I said that it was a nation wide internet news site.

(you gotta figure with 60,000 reporters we are one of the biggest)

The next lady said that we didn't need to RUSH TO WAR... I didn't ask why 12 years was a rush.

and she said that diplomacy is slow and ?frustrating? (not sure of her other word) but that it does seem to work.... WHEN? I didn't ask. She seemed so sincere.

Wimberly Tx is not some rural farming type community. Freaks from urban cities mostly populate it, and they tend to be a pretty wacko crowd. It is however one of the neatest places in the state. Trust me it is the love Bubba, and hate Dubya crowd.

100th monkey

LOL! Maybe these are Natural Law Party members(I voted for one over Doggett once) who think their meditations are going to create worldwide peaceful vibes.

Thanks for showing up. You can't make this stuff up.

Then the man asked everyone to gather around his truck and he got up on the gate and started speaking. I moved to the back. He had NO sound system and we were close to the road so he was impossible to hear. I know that he read 3 quotes but didn't hear them and then asked for 5 minutes of silence.

I heard that there were MoveOn rallies in 146 countries around the world. Wonder if he told them who was funding, organizing and what their agenda was, probably not.

But just so that info didn't slip by, I got my flyers out and passed them out to some of the autos around. One side is the letter from an Iraqi "What if the anti-war protesters win" and the other side lists most of the funding behind MoveOn, A.N.S.W.E.R. and NOT IN MY NAME. It doesn't have their names on it but it is a good list.

Thanks, Bat Lady! Somehow, I never figured that Wimberly would have a "peace rally"--guess I haven't been around these parts long enough.

You make a fine reporter.

When I turned around, I saw a lady with a SUPPORT THE TROOPS, SUPPORT BUSH sign.

Naturally I went to talk to her. She and her husband brought several signs and they stood at the back with them and we talked a little in low voices so as not to disturb the rally. She gave one of her signs to another lady I met too, more on her later. I got out my Marine flag and one sign (I made many last night but they will get used later)

On one side SADDAM SAYS THANKS FOR THE DELAYS and on the other SADDAM MUST DISARM.

Several people turned to read the signs and just laughed quietly.

FREEPER TIP... Darken your computers printed signs with big black markers so they will be seen from further away and for the night time candlelight vigils, bring a flashlite to shine on them.

Thanks for the ping and thanks for standing up for our troops and the President.
(I'll admit it, I worked in the yard this weekend. I ordered 60 bare root roses this spring, and I had to get them in the ground.)

So then I went to talk to the other lady holding the SUPPORT BUSH sign. This was her VERY FIRST activism event. We talked for a long time.

As the event broke up, several people came up to us to THANK US FOR BEING THERE AND GIVING OUR OPINION. Of course this is the great thing about America but I have NEVER been to a anti-war rally and been treated like this. Hit ... yes. One freeper spit upon... yes but not thanked and spoken so well to.

I considered this truely a "Peace rally" as opposed to an anti-war rally. Maybe the organizers are using them for the MoveOn org. but these were nice people.

The only kind of confrantation was a guy who came up and asked when had I talked to Saddam. I said that I hadn't and forgot what my sign said.... SADDAM SAYS THANKS FOR THE DELAY.

He asked then how could I know what he said, and I said that it had been reported in the paper. He said that there was no proof that he had weapons. and I said there were tons of VX and anthrax missing and he didn't prove it was destroyed. He doesn't believe that. I said they film everything like the Nazi's did, (he said like everyone else does) and that it will come out and be proved.

His parting shot, may I see the light soon.
