NBC Delays Coverage of Bush's News Conference Because of Football Games The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) - Television viewers watching President Bush speak Sunday on NBC after the Azores summit might have thought they were watching an instant replay of what was on other networks. NBC showed Bush's news conference on a delay of slightly more than a minute behind ABC, CBS and the cable news networks.
That was because NBC stations were showing regional coverage of Arena Football League games at the time, except on the West Coast. NBC wanted to show the same feed of the news conference to all of its stations, but had to wait for breaks in all the football games, said Allison Gollust, spokeswoman for NBC News.
ABC stayed longer on the summit news conference than CBS and NBC, which switched to scheduled sporting events after Bush had finished.

Jay Leno, when asked why NBC was airing Arena Football, answered "Because we couldn't afford donkey baseball".

A delay of a minute or so for a news conference is NOT a big deal. I watch on satellite TV, so EVERYTHING I was is on a slight delay. If they had decided not to cover it at all, then it would be a bigger deal.

NBC's deal with Arena Football is very different than any other network sports deal ever made in the past. NBC practically has an ownership stake in the AFL; it's not just a pay-for-play deal. They thus have a much stronger impetus to keep their telecasts "pure."

Considering the feed was so bad on FNC, the foreign speaker spoke over the translator. MSNBC had only the foreign speaker, and sadly only CNN had anything resembling a press conference that was viable.

Arena football? I'm sure that's right up there with Polynesian slap-fighting.
To: PetroniDE
The same argument could be made for showing the news conference and showing delayed footage of the football game, I suppose?

you're surprized???NBC don't care about GWB or America, they are just tit suckers

The Milwaukee CBS, NBC and FOX local stations did not carry today's press conference. Only ABC affiliate WISN carried it.
During the last shuttle tragedy it took over 25 minutes until a local station bothered to pick up the network feed.

With all the networks we have that carried the speeches, who the heck cares if one of them was a minute off or even if they decided not to carry it at all?

Yeah I noticed that also. I watched it on CNN. Eventually FNC fixed the audio problems.

Sports have become the opiate of the masses. To show you how sick some of these idiots are, two days after 9/11 I was getting a cup of coffee at work and there were four sports fans p*ssing and moaning that none of their precious games were on TV because of all "that damn stupid news that was on all the time." Gee, too bad the first shots fired in what history is likely call World War III ruined all their fun.

The FOX Network did not interrupt the NASCAR race today but FNC carried it.

They don't have a clue. Wait until the bombing starts this week and see how many networks run the war in a window so the fans can have their sports fix. The same thing happened to the Roman Empire. Gladiators became the larger than life figures and all everyone wanted to do was watch their games while their empire crumbled around them.
