"Yea, even Jesus Christ speaking by the voice of my servant whom I have called and chosen to be a light and a covenant to the world in these last days. I have called him and given him a name to be had in remembrance before me, even the name Immanuel David Isaiah, which name being interpreted means: God with us -- Beloved of God -- The Lord is salvation -- signifying the deliverence (sic) that shall come to my people by my mighty hand in these last days...."

Too much holy wine
They panhandled and stole. Apparently, the modern day prophet needed beer.
Mitchell Arraigned on Theft Charge
In his first public appearance since his Wednesday arrest for allegedly kidnapping Elizabeth Smart, Brian David Mitchell was arraigned Friday in Salt Lake City's justice court on a shoplifting charge from September 2002.
Speaking to Judge Zane Gill via closed-circuit television from the Salt Lake County Jail, Mitchell seemed calm, said he understood questions from the judge and responded concisely in a clear voice. He pleaded innocent to class B misdemeanor retail theft.
Attorney Catherine Lilly from the Salt Lake Legal Defenders Association temporarily represented Mitchell on Friday.
On Sept. 27, Mitchell allegedly tried to steal merchandise valued at $52.39 -- a flashlight, batteries, gum and beer -- from a Salt Lake City Albertson's store. Mitchell told police his name was "Go with God, born sometime after Christ," but en route to jail, Mitchell gave his real name and date of birth. He was cited and released without being booked into jail. He did not appear for a scheduled arraignment two weeks later. The police report does not indicate whether Mitchell had been alone at the grocery store.
The judge Friday set Mitchell's bail at $555, but he is being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping. A shoplifting conviction carries a possible sentence of up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine, but Salt Lake City prosecutor Sim Gill said the city charge could be dismissed in favor of the more serious kidnapping case.
"When the time comes, and if circumstances change, we might review our status in the interest of judicial economy," the prosecutor said.

Thanks for that synopsis.
An excellent resource for their history is a book named the Kingdom Of The Cults (Walter Martin). This guy documents every single sentence in that history.
I just don't remember enough about how the polygamy angle was introduced , but I certainly believe your account.
It's so sad that you have a group of people that take stock in a guy that was a gold digger and peepstone sorcerer.
The truth of the matter is I doubt most Mormons even know their own church history.
Pure speculation on your part, of course, but what if she was? Would it matter to you? Should she have an abortion or carry this baby to term?
Even better--he wrote his manifesto on a computer.
Um, Joseph Smith had upwards of 50 wives: http://www.ldshistory.net/pc/jswives/jswives.htm
He's got two restraining orders against him, one from his 2nd wife (he's had three, with Wanda being his most current wife) and one from his mother. From what I've seen on the cable news shows, he's sexually molested two of his step-daughters (from marriages #1 & #2). He walked out on his own kids and, from what I've seen & read, did some fairly bizarre things while he was with them. His first wife said he wasn't crazy, but this is all a con, and I'm beginning to believe he's not mentally ill, but used this prophet business as a dodge.
You're right. The publicity helped keep the case in the public eye, and it was two members of the public that spotted "Emmanuel," his wife and Elizabeth Smart on the streets and called 911--one saw his picture in the newspaper and the other saw him profiled on America's Most Wanted.
BTW, do you have any idea how he could have known about Jessica Wright?
Polygamy was practiced by Abraham also and others in Judaism. It doesn't matter what people call themselves or what they were ---if these types are excommunicated by the Mormon Church then they aren't Mormons because being excommunicated means that. He could call himself a Roman Catholic but that wouldn't mean he is one.
