WITH A SONG IN MY HEART: And A Knot In My Stomach

Used to be, I awoke every morning in a good mood. The dawn was breaking, the forest came alive, the coffee was ready to brew and my computer connected me to the world. Of course, after 9/11, things changed. The song in my heart was now a knot in my stomach. But then, I have faith in God and more importantly, have faith in my president, nay sayers notwithstanding. The way I figure, I’m dancing with the man who brought me and if he steps on my toes all evening, I can choose not to dance with him next party time. But more importantly, there is never any new choice to be made when it comes time to support my troops.

I am honoured to know many of them and when it comes down to it, they are all my family and I am loyal as the day is long. Were it only so, for the rest of the country. It’s common knowledge that everyone may voice their opinion, but my Constitution expects me to defend against all enemies, both foreign and domestic and that is an oath I swore to myself a long, long time ago. I don’t have to step forward and put on the uniform to understand my civic duty, nor my debt to all those who went before me and continue to protect us today.

But the storm clouds are not just on some foreign horizon. The whirlwind the co-presidents Clinton sowed we all now reap. And the dust is blowing as hard here at home as furiously as the sand blows in the desert.
