IMHO, the reason all these entertainment types gravitate leftward is that they feel ashamed that they make a jillion dollars for doing ... in a goodly number of cases, not universally ... nothing of any real consequence or lasting significance, so they basically flagellate themselves to atone for their good fortune in what they view as a world of misfortune. Of course they never think like that when they're trying to climb up the latter, they're as craven and mercenary and capitalistic as they come, it's only when they grab the brass ring that they start feeling that bleeding-heart guilt. As far out as he could be, John Lennon had his head on straight along those lines. In that famous Playboy interview right before he died, the questioner asked him about how he balanced his immense fortune with the leftist activism he was involved in at one point, and his response was, "What would you have me do, give it away and walk the streets? I wasn't satisfied with $2, I wasn't satisfied with $2,000 and I wasn't satisfied with $2 million."

That's an interesting quote from John Lennon.

On a similar note, I once heard a fascinating story from a DJ in New York who truly believes that John Lennon went through life haunted by the fact that he did not write a particular song (Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale"). The DJ said that he would happen to see Lennon driving his Bentley in Manhattan once every month or so, and nearly every time he saw him, that song was playing on Lennon's car radio.
