The Police Department is responsible for assisting in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulation of assigned non-criminal matters. In addition to the traditional functions of a police agency, they are responsible for the administration of the Citys public safety communications and dispatch center. Neighborhood Focus Policing and Neighborhood Preservation have become a major focus and responsibility. Police Administration has the responsibility for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Police operations, programs and activities. The Police Chief has and will continue to have a significant responsibility for the design and implementation of the 800 MHz County-wide communication system.
Police Investigations consists of the following activities: Investigations Bureau, General Investigations (Crimes Against Person and Crimes Against Property), Special Investigations (Intelligence, Narcotics and Vice) Youth Services Officer and School Resource Officer/Gangs, and DARE. Investigations Command is directly administered by a Police Captain who is responsible to the Police Chief for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the investigations and Gang programs and activities. At the heart of the youth programs is prevention and diversion. The interaction with school officials is a major asset and has significantly impacted the success of the various programs.
Police Operations consists of the following activities: Patrol, Traffic (including Crossing Guards), Neighborhood Focused Policing, Police Canines, Animal Control (including Contracted Services), Volunteers, Jail Operations, Police Facility Operations, Firearms and Safety and Emergency Operations. Operations Command is directly administered by a Police Captain who is responsible to the Police Chief for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the field operations, programs and activities, and operations of the facility and jail.
Support Services consists of the following activities: Information Technology, Records, Communications, Property/Evidence Control, Court Services, Community Relations and Crime Prevention. All Public Safety activities are linked and dependent on the services of the Support Unit. Support Services is directly administered by the Police Captain responsible for Investigations. Major program activities this next fiscal year will center on the upgrade to the computer system with CAD and Records.
