Disappointed WWII Veteran Returns Medal From France

NEW PORT RICHEY - When World War II soldier Angelo Pizzuti received a certificate of thanks from France during a ceremony in Sims Park here two years ago, it was a moment of pride he shared with more than 300 other local veterans. But now Pizzuti, 80, is saying no thanks to the recognition.

He's upset the country he helped liberate almost 60 years ago is not supporting U.S. efforts to forcibly disarm Iraq.

``When France betrayed us, that was a terrible thing [French President Jacques] Chirac did, stabbing us in the back,'' Pizzuti said Monday.

During the weekend, he sent back the ``Thank You America'' certificate to the French Consulate in Miami with a letter expressing his dismay with the French government.

Pizzuti told how he was wounded in the hand by artillery fire in fall 1944 as he fought in the Army's 5th Infantry Division in Metz, France.

``I left my blood on your soil,'' he wrote.

Pizzuti said he hopes letters like his will help convince Chirac that it's time to use arms against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Sentimentality over stuff like this is a weakness. I have thrown away every award or honor I have ever won in my life, because it has no value to me.

Being sentimental or valuing a ribbon and a shiny badge makes your weak. Sorry, that's the way I feel.

Find value and self worth for yourself, and shun external validation of it.

Have you every been in the military? The reason I ask is instead of a pay raise or a promotion, the "Shiny badge" is given to show appreciation.

Here is a man, that has value and self worth, he decide to return something that is truly important to him THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE. That is what alot of those ribbons, and shiny badges we wear on our uniforms are.

To say that man is weak because he dose not hold the same thoughts as you is very closed minded, and offensive. Put yourself in his shoes. Oh wait you probally can't as you probally have never been involved in a two way live fire.

re. 6 - You may very well be right. The awards are probably more for others than the recipients as those who truly deserve them are not likely to cherish the symbol - they cherish the fact that they were willing to go the distance for a just cause.
