War protests hit the stage of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

NEW YORK, Mar 11, 2003 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- A potential war with Iraq wasn't far from the minds of some musicians who turned out for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

"Tonight we're having a good time," singer Neil Young said at Monday's ceremony. "But we're going to kill a lot of people next week. Let's not forget about that ... We're making a huge mistake."

Young, who wrote the anti-Vietnam War rocker, "Ohio," was speaking at the Waldorf Astoria ceremony to honor record executive Mo Ostin.

Despite the presence of intently political musicians like the Clash, U2's the Edge and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello, it was a member of Elvis Costello's band who made the most blunt plea for peace.

Keyboard player Steve Nieve referred to the 1970s hit, "War," asking, "What is it good for? Absolutely nothing."

He also quoted his boss' 1984 song about Britain's war with Argentina, "Shipbuilding," saying, "We're diving for dear life when we could be diving for pearls."

Nieve then played the organ as Costello performed the song, "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?"

Guitarist Mick Jones of the Clash saluted an old friend he went to school with, who he said was in Baghdad, ready to serve as a human shield in case of war.

The Clash were Marxists (although I still enjoyed many of their songs and found Joe Strummer to be a pleasant man when I met him briefly).

When will the useful idiots realize that they are protesting with communists.

The "onset" of war should provoke some reflection but it does not mean that war is never a valid response. War is here whether we want to fight it or not. When Saddam violated his peace agreements and continued with his weapons programs, he broke the peace from the end of the 1991 Gulf War.

If a convicted violent felon were loose on the streets and acquiring firearms, would people be asking why is this man still loose and not being prosecuted for his illegal weapons? It is not the concept of whether all weapons are illegal but whether it is legal for this man to possess them. Those who push for gun control seem to be the ones against this war.

Negotiating a "peace" with Japan and Germany in WWII without toppling their leaders would have only allowed our enemies to get stronger; sealing our own doom.

I let this paraphrase loose on the world. In the interest of historical accuracy, here is the actual story with direct quote:

Hey didn't Neil Young write a tune called "Let's Roll"? And now that were rolling, he thinks it's a huge mistake? What exactly did he think that phrase meant? It meant, "We're going to kill these guys before they kill us or die trying." How is that different from taking out the world's A #1 terroist state? Are any of these guys coherent?
