Gephardt defends Missouri primary, cites use by troops

HANNIBAL, Mo. - Presidential candidate Richard Gephardt has enlisted the military in his party's fight to protect Missouri's 2004 presidential primary from Republican attack.
Rep. Gephardt, D-St. Louis County, warned Missouri Republicans over the weekend that scuttling the primary would disenfranchise soldiers - an important and politically sensitive voting bloc, especially as the nation prepares for war.
"Soldiers can't very well take part in a caucus," Gephardt said, referring to the GOP's preferred alternative for next year. Citing the state's budget problems, GOP legislators have cut the $3.7 million allocated for the primary from the proposed state budget.
As in most states, Missouri-based military personnel stationed abroad or on ships vote in state and local elections via absentee ballots. But caucuses require that people show up in person to participate.
Gephardt's observations came in an interview with the Post-Dispatch on Saturday while he attended Democrat Days, a statewide gathering in Hannibal that kicks off the political season.
Gephardt was among a number of top Democrats who said they were surprised by state Republican actions to eliminate the state's presidential primary - especially because the GOP had pushed for the primary following the 1996 caucuses.
Scott Baker, spokesman for the Missouri Republican Party, said Sunday that Gephardt and other Democratic leaders were ignoring the key issue.
"Everybody thinks the primary is a good idea," he said. "But the fact remains that - with the Republicans having one (presidential) candidate and state Democrats having a favorite son - this is a $4 million favor for Dick Gephardt. Lawmakers will have to decide if the state can afford such a favor."
Gephardt said his political ambitions had nothing to do with it, noting that Missouri lawmakers had set up the presidential primary years ago.
"I've always thought that a primary is better than a caucus because more people participate," he said.

As soon as I saw the headline the memories returned of the DemoCraps attempts to trash the Military vote. And the very next year we were attacked, and I don't think that's a coincidence. After all, any goon can sit on the sideline and see the Evil Left doing it's work, and decide it's time to make a move.
I will NEVER forget, and I will NEVER have a scintilla of respect for a Leftist. They became pure unadulterated EVIL when they went after our Protectors.

Maybe he could go after the eyebrow-challenged vote. There has to be a pool of untapped votes from victims of bad waxings gone wrong.

Typical junk journalism. All those numbers and words but somehow they missed the most important fact for developing an informed opion. How many absentee votes are typically received?

Gephardt is only trying to posture Himself as a supporter of the military, but it won't work! The reason is that 98% of our troups are real men and women who are conservitive, leaving the other 2% as those who just want to be near them.( you know the type Im refering to)
And as to the Military vote in 2000, you are absolutly correct! But not to worry because our Military Men and women won't forget what the American communist did in that election.
