International Wimps’ Day

The women in Washington D.C. and San Francisco who protested the impending war with Iraq, in honor of International Women’s Day, are a disgrace to all women. They claim to be progressive, when in fact, they are regressive, marching backwards against the tide of history.

The silly names of their organizations, “Code Pink” and “Women in Black,” are a case in point. For some unknown reason, the “Code Pink” ladies decided that pink is a symbol of oppression, so they dressed up like walking Pepto-Bismol bottles. Their ridiculous chanting of “Bush says Code Red; we say Code Pink” did little to add to their already shrinking credibility. Perhaps next time, they could wear pink burqas in honor of their Islamic sisters for whom they claim to speak. Then there were the “Women in Black” who cleverly chose to wear black as a symbol of death. Too bad they weren’t thinking about the many women who have been raped or killed under Saddam Hussein’s regime. Whether pink or black, fashion statements do not a liberated woman make.

These types of organizations continue to fuel the patronizing myth that women are naturally pacifistic and must therefore be against all war. Following this logic, if you’re female and you support the war, then you’re not a real woman. Well, that would describe myself and millions of other women across the country who understand what’s at stake in the War on Terrorism and support war with Iraq. Far from being less female, this makes us even more so. Anyone who’s ever witnessed the terrible fury of a mama bear protecting her cubs, knows that the idea of female pacifism is a crock. If anything, women understand only too well the importance of protecting hearth and home and are willing to do anything to achieve that goal.

The “Code Pink” types claim that they’re against the war for the sake of the women of Iraq, when it is exactly those women who stand to gain the most from our Western democratic influence. Any woman who cares about women’s’ rights and isn’t determined to change the face of the Islamic world, has no credibility. These are the same women who complained when we liberated Afghanistan, freeing its women from the most oppressive government in the world and allowing them to go back to school and to work. The Code Pinkers still haven’t acknowledged the enormity of those changes, because to do so would be to admit that America can be a force for good. Blinded by their hatred of President Bush, they would rather condemn the U.S. than support military intervention that would ultimately lead to an increase in women’s rights in the Muslim world. But we hear virtually nothing from these groups about the plight of women in Islamic countries, because they’re too busy trying to get rich American women into golf clubs whilst complaining about President Bush, whose National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, just happens to be a woman.

If these ladies weren’t so intellectually dishonest, they might show some support for the brave women who are serving in our armed forces right now. These soldiers are fighting for the security of our country, which includes the sorry behinds of the protesters, whether they deserve it or not. They are the true female warriors, not these liberal ninnies who only raise their voices to criticize their own country.

And if they truly cared about “International Women’s Day,” they would be out in force supporting the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime and any other regime in the region which oppresses women. Instead, they wear pink and black clown suits and pretend to speak for all women. Perhaps “International Wimps’ Day” would be a more apt occasion.
