That's a real weasel tactic, only to veto if the resolution would otherwise pass.
To: rumrunner
FOX News just picked it up. We'd best just start the war now then.

No matter what they will veto. Time to vote and get it on...Bombs away tomorrow I hope.
To: rumrunner
Excellent, then we won't have to wait any ten days.

Can we start this Now, Please!

Going ahead and attacking tonight might achieve a considerable amount of tactical surprise.
If Saddam's advisers are as much like Stalin's as I suspect, he may be banking on being able to avert an attack, and the advisers may not have the b***s to tell him he might be wrong.

Weasel room?!?If Chirac is in it, by definition it is a weasel room!

Chirac is signalling in advance that it's OK for the on-the-fence countries to abstain or vote for the resolution if they want to avoid pissing off the US - that France will take the hit to make sure there's no UN approval for our action in Iraq.
Michael Ledeen's column in NRO today advances an interesting theory as to why.

So in other words, the Frenchies will only cast a NO vote that doesn't matter. How gallant!

Oh my goodness, CNN was saying this a full hour ago. I've been off-board for a little while but felt sure this had been made known here.
Russian and France it seems. Although I heard speculation earlier that Putin still hadn't made the final decision. Moot point really if France does it.

veto all you want, the eagle is gonna fly!
To: Redcloak
Chirac came on TV and announced this himself.
I suspect we just might have the votes.

We'd best just start the war now then. Yes. If France truly is going to hold to this position, there's no need to bother participating in a fraud. The five permanent members have already made their positions known. There's no further need to have them "be counted." Tactical surprise does not lend itself to the setting of "deadlines" which an enemy can then prempt to fog up the battlefield. Powell should demand the vote today after the Blix b*tchslap. If the SC refuses, he should just walk out.
Enough.
