Anti-Semitic incidents in Canada up 60%
By MICHAEL FREUND
The number of anti-Semitic incidents in Canada last year soared by more than 60% over 2001 according to statistics compiled by the League for Human Rights of B'nai B'rith Canada, the National Post reported.
The annual audit found that there were 459 episodes of anti-Semitism in Canada in 2002, the highest number recorded in the 20 years since B'nai B'rith began tracking such data and double the figure of five years ago.
The report notes that Jews in Canada were subjected to "death threats, bomb threats, physical assaults, anthrax scares with a hate/bias orientation, serious acts of vandalism and cemetery desecrations."
While most of the incidents were classified as "harassment", there were also 148 documented cases of anti-Semitic vandalism and 29 violent attacks against Jews. Most of the incidents occurred in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, where the majority of Canadian Jewry currently resides.
