Not that you have anyway of knowing this (because today's priests/ministers are no longer schooled in the classics), but "Cain" is ancient Hebrew/Yiddish for "spear", while "Abel" is ancient Hebrew/Yiddish for "vanity".
The tale is a metaphor. The spear (Cain) slew vanity (Abel).
It gives an entirely new meaning to the Bible when one reads it in its original format.

The tale is a metaphor. The spear (Cain) slew vanity (Abel). Not sure if I agree. Abel gave his best to God. Can didn't find as much approval. Thus, it was Cain's own vanity, which led him to kill Abel. imo
