Goodrich faces 6th hit-and-run charge
03/07/2003
Former Dallas Cowboys player Dwayne Goodrich is facing a sixth charge in connection with a January hit-and-run accident that left two men dead and a third injured, according to county records.
The football player has not been indicted, but his attorney said he has been talking with prosecutors about a possible June 9 trial date.
"We anticipate getting indicted, and we've been in ongoing discussions about a mutually convenient trial date," Dallas attorney Reed Prospere said.
Mr. Goodrich, who remains free on bond, already faced two counts of manslaughter and three charges of failure to stop and render aid in the Jan. 14 incident. Police say the accident occurred when Mr. Goodrich, 24, drove between a concrete barrier and a burning car on northbound Interstate 35E.
He now faces an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the broken leg and other injuries sustained by Shuki Josef, a good Samaritan at the scene.
It was not known whether a new arrest warrant would be issued or whether Mr. Goodrich would have to turn himself in and post a new bond. Lead prosecutor Fred Burns said Thursday that he would address those issues after consulting with Mr. Prospere and the judge.
Prosecutors were scheduled Thursday to present all six charges to a Dallas County grand jury, according to public records. Because grand jury proceedings are secret, officials would not say whether the cases were heard or whether grand jurors requested more time.
If grand jurors were to indict Mr. Goodrich, that decision would not be announced until Tuesday or Thursday. Thursday's no-bill reports did not include Mr. Goodrich, but he also could be listed on Tuesday's reports if grand jurors decline to indict him.
