SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco Bay area gas prices are breaking records and irritating motorists, and the price is not much lower in Southern California. In San Francisco, regular unleaded fuel now costs an average of $2.19 a gallon, according to a survey by AAA of Northern California. In Oakland, gas averages $2.09 a gallon, and in San Jose it has hit $2.08.

Statewide, the average price is $2.04, beating the previous record of $2.03 set in May 2001.

The average price was a bit under $2.01 per gallon in the Los Angeles area and about a penny higher in Orange County. San Diego drivers were paying an average of nearly $2.04 per gallon.

Anyone know if those are "full service" prices?

I was in San Mateo last week and saw Full-Serve Super for $2.45 a gallon. Regular Self-Serve was $2.05. Thank God I don't live in that armpit of America.

How come it costs so much to live in cities that are run by Democrats?

I was thinking the same thing...that taking account for inflation that we are paying less for gas today than we were 20 years ago...but then again I flunked Economics in college LOL

and if you are on the 405 in Orange County and you see Fountain Valley get off(Warner Exit to Euclid Exit)... and get some gas...the cheapest in LA or OC...must be an old Indian burial ground along the freeway there too because there is an accident there every day morning and/or evening

who bought homes two and three hours from their workplace are going to be hurting.

That's just kinda the way things are in Kalifornia...when I was in the 'career thing', I drove 30 miles each way (45 to 120 minutes, depending on whether or not a dog shat on the side of the freeway, causing looky-loo gridlock).

It's a spread-out kind of state. You sort of get used to it.....sort of.

I honestly - and I mean this - don't know of any "full service" gas stations on any heavily traveled routes....there may be a few neighborhood places around, but it sure isn't the norm.

The thing here is, gas up after using your rudimentary Pakistani-Anglais dictionary to prepay your load, and THEN go home and use your dipstick, tire gauge, etc.

Almost correct -- we don't want to use MTBE or ethanol. Gas from the "76" company has been meeting the pollution requirements for some number of years now; more recently, Chevron has begun advertising MTBE-free gas as well. We don't want to be held hostage to the farm belt.

The cheapest no-name self-serve in San Jose is exactly $2.00 today, and $2.08 or so at the branded stations -- that $2.19 for SF is indeed self-serve as well.

The notion of "full service" gas stations juxtaposed over the thought of San Francisco... well, let's just say I don't wanna go there.

"It's ridiculous," said Sandra Cerrigan, who paid $2.23 for gas for her Land Rover at a San Francisco Chevron Station. "We're getting gouged."

Yeah, Sandy, yer getting gouged by a bunch of RATS in yer state guvament that slap you with some of the highest gas taxes in the nation. They pretty much got you bent over so far you can see yesterday's sunset :)

Now, whatcha gonna do?
