Iraq attempted to declare war on the United States Tuesday morning at Topeka's 39th Annual Model United Nations, but the action failed.
Model United Nations Delegate Lindsey Smith of Emporia High School was told to formally withdraw her resolution by the United Nations Security Council.
At least 880 students from across Kansas participated in the event Monday and Tuesday at the Maner Conference Centre and Capitol Plaza Hotel.
Model United Nations coordinator Jenay Weekly, who is the gifter facilitator for Robinson Middle School, said that the Model United Nations is probalby the second largest in the Midwest, the largest being in Chicago.

When I was in high school, our goverment teacher had us play Monopoly - only she called it Oligopoly (?). We divided into groups of 4 and started playing and buying property. After about 20 minutes, she blew a whistle and nationalized the railroad. Anyone who had bought one had to turn them back in. Next came the utilities, then rent control. It was a pretty educational and eye opening experience, I thought.

I cannot believe UN propoganda films are being shown in schools, but that is probably tame nowadays...

)."Children, do you all want to sit around a bicker and waste time or do you want to act like the UN". Loved that episode! Especially where Ralph breaks into singing "OH, CANADA". 'course, later, when they're marooned on the island, everyone has war paint on and Ralph just says, "meow"...

Great exercise in teaching! Federalize everything, and tax the heck out of the citizens!
My International Relations teacher had been teacher of the year, a few times. He let us destroy the UN... as a lesson, I suppose. Most of the kids, didn't get it. And, I do remember that we all thought it was unfair when Uganda had a seat on the security council, like Uganda could really influence the world... we see the same problem today, on the security council, of course.
What do I know... I was a geek in HS,and paid attention! :)

Bravo!
Now there's a teacher who goes the extra mile to show students the results of gubmint interference in the economy. ;^)
Very 'eye-opening', indeed!

Maybe the kids were making the point that the UN is worthless, but I doubt that they would repel from their programming and indoctrination and think for themselves.

It was very subtle. They were "informational" films, but with a bias. The kids wouldn't have realized that, however. They may have been made by one of the UN sub-groups; one dealt with world hunger. It's been a few years, so I don't remember all the details.

Wow.
I remember in my high school, I had an international relations game, mock run for public office (I was the prez candidate), and also a mock state legislature. Really fun stuff! I am glad we didn't do a mock U.N. though; that would have just upset me.
