[US Workplace/School] 'Sickout' to Protest Potential Iraq War
The Tri Valley Herald (California) ^ | March 5, 2004 SGT | Josh Richman

Posted on 03/05/2003 6:35:58 AM PST by ewing

Workers and students across the nation plan to skip work and school Wednesday in a national moriatorium to stop the impending war against Iraq.

Backed by dozens of religious, labor, community and anti war groups, the moriatorium's theme is 'no school, no work no business as usual.'

Participants are being encouraged to call in sick close their businesses, cancel classes, hold workplace talks about the war, conduct special services at house of worship and stage non violent protests.

The student walkout has gained a momentum of its own, with thousands of students on more than 200 campuses pledging to boycott classes.

In the Bay Area, plans are underway at campuses including U of California at Berkeley, California State University and De Anza College, as well as some high schools.

Some students are also demanding that their campuses remove ROTC and JROTC military training programs, and they are calling for a repeal of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act provision requiring high schools to give students names to military recruiters.

Call me a Cynic, but do you think that the fact that it is Ash Wednesday, might have something to do with it.....

Sounds like a cynical attempt to make something out of nothing.

Some teachers in Chicago public high schools are encouraging this.

There's a rally downtown at like 4:30 pm.

I live in a tiny college town and was wondering whether the 1960s-refugees faculty were going to organize their sheeplike students into such an action. Instead of skipping classes, it seems they've started a "peace coalition," which will have some activities late this afternoon. They're open to the public - don't know if I have the nerve to confront them solo.

two thoughts come to mind. First, I live in this area(20 miles removed)and I am glad that I send my two kids to a Catholic School. Second, I remember not too long ago that there was a sick out at schools for "anti-gay" treatment/harassment in the schools. Same ol' crap by the same ol' people. Wake up and smell the organic coffee you idiots.

If you're suggesting that people are in the habit of using Ash Wednesday as a holiday, it is not a holiday for Catholics at least. We go to mass and go to work / school.

Here's the thread I posted several days ago about this so-called student strike, Books, not Bombs!, with a link to one of the antiwar (read, anti-U.S.) sites promoting it.

Ha! We had a bunch of snow today in West Michigan so it's a snowday for nearly all the schools anyways.

Snow for peace!
