Fake accent for 'voice' of Hussein?

NEW YORK -- Steve Winfield is a listed member of the Screen Actors Guild and, according to the owner of the "Fabulous Voices" Web site on which he once appeared, a translator with a particular flair for foreign accents.

Last week, for 17 million TV viewers, he was also the voice of Saddam Hussein during Dan Rather's exclusive CBS News interview of the Iraqi leader. Apparently putting on an Arabic accent, Winfield -- who spoke with a seemingly everyday North American accent when he talked briefly to a reporter this week -- read Hussein's answers to Rather's questions.

Huh? They used someone with an accent for the translation? I detest See BS News, too, but this hardly qualifies as "faking" the interview.

They used an actor who specializes in accents to read the translation of others and pretend he was the translator. According to the following from the story, the guy is multi-lingual, but Arabic is not listed. Considering how marketable an Arabic translator is nowadays, I doubt that particular skill wouldn't be listed, if he possessed it:

At the Web site Fabulous Voices, a clearinghouse for actors and others seeking voice-over work for everything from commercials to books on tape, owner Frank Henry described Winfield, who used to be part of the roster, as a translator in addition to his voice-over work, and said he specialized in putting on foreign accents. Another Web site says Winfield can do "sessions in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and German," and has "directed translation projects in a myriad of languages including: Chinese, Japanese, Punjabi, Hungarian, Swedish, Russian and Czech."

Wasn't it CBS that digitally imposed it's logo into a scene of Times Square during a New Year's broadcast? Wasn't it CBS that had a reporter 'from the field' actually standing in front of a blue screen in the studio?

The way I heard it, Rather bribed the Vietnamese kid to float that story to cover up for the fact that he saw Rather soil his Fruit of the Looms when said kid lit off a firecracker near his bunk.... 8~)

I just realized the obvious answer to my question: That wasn't Saddam in the interview. It was one of his doubles, who doesn't speak English.

I heard Greta Von Sustern talking to Kristol about the Rather/Saddam interview and she remarked that Saddam had about nine body doubles, how did Rather know that he was really talking to Saddam? She said imagine sitting across the table from a body double for an hour and half.

I didn't watch the Rather interview, but I saw a shot of Saddam, Rather, and two interpreters sitting around a table. I assumed the voices heard on the tape would be the voices of those 4 people seated around the table. How naive is that?

If this isn't the case, how could experts ever check to make certain that the translations are accurate, that Saddam didn't doctor them, and later that CBS didn't doctor them again?

But of course as is the case with the evening news, the worst offenses are those of omission, what we're not told. Wondering aloud what's on the CBS cutting room floor.

And by the way, I can only imagine the uproar if this involved FOXNews instead of CBS.

I was hoping against hope that as Dan Rather shook hands with the Evil One (not ex42) that he may have implanted a microscopic tracking device.....but given Rather would "rather" support evil than a conservative president, that hope faded to reality.....

Moreover, how do we even know that was Saddam? Afterall, he has what, 25 look-alikes?
