Columbia attorney Tom Turnipseed has postponed a trip to Iraq with a national peace group after his wife was hospitalized over the weekend.
Turnipseed had planned to leave for Baghdad this week with a delegation of eight other Americans with Voices in the Wilderness.
But Turnipseed's wife, Judy, was hospitalized Sunday because of exhaustion. She is the office manager of his law firm and had headed the support team for his Iraq trip.
"I can't leave my wife right now," he said Monday.
Turnipseed said he still hopes to travel to Iraq. Voices for Wilderness, which has sent about 50 delegations there since 1996, has not scheduled its next trip, he said.
Turnipseed said the delegation plans to visit schools and hospitals to make Americans aware of how the United States' sanctions on Iraq and a potential war would affect Iraqi citizens. The group doesn't intend to be human shields, he said.
"We are trying to interact with everyday civilians. We're not fooling with anything to do with the military."
Turnipseed plans to send nonprescription medications and letters to Iraqis that he collected locally with the remaining members of the delegation.
Turnipseed was one of George Wallace's Democratic presidential campaign directors in 1968 before having a change of heart. He served in the state Senate from 1976 to 1980. Most recently, in 1998, he ran against Charlie Condon for attorney general.

Heard about this on a local radio show ( Greg Alan, 730 WSC Charleston, SC ) and have an audio clip of Turnipseed talking about going to Iraq from Alan's show. Foul language alert

I think Turnipseed was rambling the whole time, the clip comes in at the end of the interview.

Is that a for-real name?

Mr. Appleseed wanted to go but the dog ate his homework, I mean airline ticket.

Yes he's real. Didn't hear the beginning of the interview, but that clip was about the only coherent part.

Two words for this guy: "Chicken S**t". When the chips came down he had to have his wife enter a hospital with exhaustion from planning his trip. What a pansy. Sorry, I didn't mean to insult the flower.

I read a report on the human shields where one gloated, "You would be amazed at how many of us are organic farmers!".

I think turnipseed fell out of the back of a turnip truck and cracked his turnip head.
