Last Friday, Feb 28th, 2003, Worldcom announced another set of layoffs here locally in Colorado. A aqaintance of ours, who is a middle manager in the company, called to brag that even though they were laying off a few hundred people from Worldcom he wasn't let go and he received a substantial raise because he was a manager.
I myself am sick and tired of people taking it in the shorts laying down like a bunch of dead sheep. When will we as citizens demand that we are treated like humans and not like dogs!!! Our politicians and heads of corporate entities are ruining the world in which we sleep, eat and raise our children. When will we stand up like those who came before us and take back this great country? Are we nothing more than mud on the bottom of our representatives shoes? How could someone relish in the demise of his fellow humans all the while picking up another 30k in salary, even when this person doesn't do any real work? I wonder why we, the citizens of the United States, have not stood up and decided we have had enough! If my grandfather were alive today he would spit in the face of these corporate crooks all the while tightening the rope around their necks before he kicked the chair out from under their feet. Where are the citizens of this country? The same ones who stood together during WWI, WWII, etc? Has greed destroyed our values and made us help in the demise of our fellow citizens? Are we not like Rome in her final days? Please make sure these losers here from you if you have been wronged and since there is only one way to get at them these days I guess I will provide you a link:

In the meantime you should know that I have disowned this scumbag and given the legal chance to make him pay, I would smile as I did so.

No way in hell would I take it. I would not lay off people just so I could get a raise, I am happy with what I have now, I don't need a new excursion to satisfy the needs of my soul, I am not that shallow! Are you?

Worldcom should be able to hire and fire whom they like, and pay them whatever they choose.
They are not a charitable organization.
My problem with the major corporations is their procurement of the government. No corporations should be able to spend 1 cent on political contributions, political action committees or any sort of direct or indirect political financing.

And no government free government should support corporations with charity.

You say worldcom is not a charity and yet it is. Did they not take corporate subsidies from our tax money? Are they not at this very moment using our tax dollars in order to remain in business? Are we not all paying for the losses they will right off this year?

Hey, we believe you.

No, a corporal in the US Army during WWI, a man who told the truth and stood up to corruption, something you should try.
To: jlogajan
Yes but it is better than getting $30k while people are getting laid off. I say "Let 'em die".

"If my grandfather were alive today he would spit in the face of these corporate crooks all the while tightening the rope around their necks before he kicked the chair out from under their feet."
BTW, that was figurative, saying he stood up to corruption.

It's really the corporate culture that has to impress the investors (mutual funds and all other institutional money managers) with a flashy balance sheet each quarter. It doesn't matter that the top execs of the corps get multi-million dollar compensation packages. If you work for someone else, that's the reality of the situation. There is no more cradle to grave culture in corp USA. If your ex-friend received an increase and gloated about it in light of many others being "downsized", he may just be breathing his sigh of relief that, at least, he's still generating income. By the way, I was "retired" from a major NYC bank last year, with a good package. I may be back there in a couple of months as a consultant, making more money than before. If you choose to work for others, just accept the way things are and roll with the punches. Don't even begin to suggest that government get involved with this. They can't even tie their shoelaces.

The problem is that they are involved in it. Does our government not give large subsidies to our corporations? Do our officials not take large bribes, campaign contributions, from these corporations, do these corporations not eat their own employees who pay the taxes the officials use to bribe the corporations who in turn bribe the politions?

He passed away in 1988, at the ripe old age of 92. Great man.
To: samuel_adams_us
Did he inform you that sometimes employers pay bonuses to departments per head for getting rid of people.
To: samuel_adams_us
You are absolutely correct. I've just gotten jaded over the years (60 this coming Dec.). I'm not going to change anything. Just roll with the "reality".
Retirement should be coming up in a few years. I've got a place in the sun in the Caribbean. It's a corrupt country, but at least they're quite up front about it. No snow or cold weather. I can, certainly, put up with the heat.

No, but if they do, they are sick bastards.
To: NYDave
There you go, just give in, never stand up to corruption, it doesn't affect me so I don't care. Wow, sounds like Europe before Nazi Germany doesn't it?

Most likely, the manager is now going to have to do a lot of additional work, that used to be performed by his departed employees. Companies don't give middle managers raises out of generosity; raises are given when necessary to keep the middle managers from jumping ship (which they often do shortly after senior management eliminates a big chunk of their workers). This is the free market at work. The laid off workers will sooner or later find new jobs doing something which makes a bigger contribution to the economy than their positions at WorldCom did. The manager who remains will have to make a bigger contribution to the economy than he was making before.
