Topic Abuse, Particularly Activism

Hi all.

When posting articles, please limit the topics to those which are apparent for the article. Do not go out of your way to put in more topics just to try to get more views for your thread. Doing so makes the topics less usable for everyone.

Possibly the worst examples can be found in the "Activism" topic. I think just showing some examples here will make the point:

Gov:(Mitt Romney of MA) Budget will change, taxes promise will not was posted to Activism. It is understandable that the poster wanted to see some activism result from the article, but this is not in and of itself activism. This article did not belong in the activism topic.

Transcript: Sen. Pat Roberts on Fox News Sunday (Are Republicans prepared to fight for Estrada) was posted to activism. Again, it is understandable that the poster wanted to see some activism result from the article, but this is not in and of itself activism. This article did not belong in the activism topic.

FReep this poll is an example of a type of thread posted frequently to the activism topic. While a very loose interpretation of activism might lead one to put these here, they really don't accomplish much and should probably be put in vanity.

How the Laci Peterson story has any relevance to activism is beyond me.

The Spoils of Glory (France) is not activism.

I am just giving some examples there from the most recent dozen posts. I would estimate that about 75% of what is being posted to the activism topic has nothing to do with activism of any sort.

Only you can prevent topic abuse.

It looks to me like one of the other moderators restored it, but the reason I had removed it was that hours earlier, there had been a thread in the breaking news sidebar about it here.

Thanks for the explanation. I searched for the title I posted but didn't see the previous post. Now I somewhat understand, although I appreciate the restoration and agree that it is still evolving.

We need a solution that will work on all browser without major reconfiguation here. Also, had same problem on Opera -- how can you explain that?

actually, setting your browser to wipe temp net files on shutdown is something you can do to help keep things nice and tidy (among others)

How about a daily thread of "Do the Poll Thingy" and the ones that have their links can just add them all to the one thread? It would be easier to get our input that way.

Is there a way to REMOVE certain topics from our Breaking News sidebar?

For instance, how do I get rid of the 'FREEPER March in Washinton DC,' the 'Last Chance for a state room on the Freeper Cruise,' etc. from my Breaking News sidebar?

I prefer to keep my news seperate from these miscellaneous items.

'Breaking News' for me ideally would only include the hard news stories of the day... Estrada, N. Korea, shuttle disaster, etc.

If you check out f*ckedmicrosoft.com (or something like that) you will find that these files are NEVER erased, only hidden. It may help with some of the problem, but it is a definite privacy error on the part of MS. I think they call these "super secret" hidden files, or something like that.

At this time, there is no way to do this. Sorry.

I think they call these "super secret" hidden files, or something like that.

The Temporary Internet Files do get deleted if IE is set up properly.

However, An index of the Temporary Internet Files is also created and updated as you visit different sites so that the sites you have visited can still be recreated even if you have deleted Temporary Internet Files.

These files are named index.dat and reside in the Temporary Internet Files folder/sub-folders. There are programs you can install to delete these "super secret" files. The one I use is freeware and is named System Security Suite 1.01. I run it perhaps once a week or more often if I do a lot of surfing.

There are other programs that are not freeware. I don't know how they work, in detail. The freeware version I use has to be run manually and a reboot is necessary in order to rid your system of the index.dat files.

Deleting Temporary Internet Files and index.dat files should become a habit for anyone concerned with internet security and everyone should be concerned about internet security.
