Jesica to be buried in N.C.(Mother's Insurance covered 80% expenses)

RALEIGH -- Jesica Santillan, the 17-year-old Mexican girl who died after a botched heart-lung transplant, will be buried in Louisburg, her adopted hometown. Jesica's family wants to remain in Louisburg to be involved in Jesica's Hope Chest, a charitable foundation established in Jesica's name, and to reply to the "many expressions of love" they have received, said Armando Ortiz-Rocha, the Mexican consul in Raleigh, who met with the family Thursday.

Mahoney said he sponsored Huerta about 18 months ago under a program in which undocumented immigrants could receive permanent residency in the United States, known as a "green card." Immigrants with close family members who were U.S. citizens or had sponsoring employers were given until April 30, 2001, to apply for green cards, after Congress temporarily revived a provision, 245(i), that waived harsh penalties for entering illegally.

"We're going to try to expedite it, to where they can get their papers," Mahoney said.

Huerta has worked in Louisburg as a day laborer and, on occasion, for Mahoney directly. Magdalena Santillan works for Louisburg College, where she had health insurance benefits.

Mahoney said the insurance was supposed to cover 80 percent of the cost of Jesica's transplant, which he tabbed at roughly $1 million. The foundation he established in Jesica's name planned to pay the balance.

And what penalties will this college be subjected to for hiring an illegal alien? I wonder....

My thoughts exactly. Seems like it's a non issue now. Wait till the law suit(s) are filed. This is going to get out of hand in a heartbeat.

Ya mean to keep their hands in the foundation.... Lawbreakers from the start. Illegally in country, Hired illegally, then sponsored for a greencard....as illegals. Now the insurance is going to pay for the daughter to be burried in the US, so parents now have a "right" to be here..... OK...Let's give up. They want this place so bad, and folks in this country seem tickled pink to give it to them.... OK>..anyone have a private tropical island us few remaining conservatives can move to? [/sarcasm off]

I only posted this to correct the ubiquitous assertion on this forum that Medicaid was paying 80% of Jesica's operation.

I thought the whole clan was a bunch of illegals? I guess if you're born here you're in, and if you die here you're in too......

Oh, please, leave the sarcasm tag off. And let me know when you find it (the tropical island, that is).

They are burying her here because they are afraid if they go to Mexico they won't be able to get back into the country. Period.

If this is true, she was here two and a half years illegally.

I have been thinking thoughts like this for some time now.

Mack Mahoney, a Louisburg home builder who has helped raise money for Jesica's medical care, said Thursday that he helped her and her mother start the process for becoming documented residents in 2000, and that former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., had helped.

Richard Gottlieb, director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service's N.C. office, said Thursday he wasn't aware of the girl's immigration status and was checking on it in response to inquiries.

In the past, the INS has helped immigrants remain in the United States to secure medical treatment they couldn't get in their own countries, Gottlieb said.

The INS has been aware of Jesica's whereabouts since 2000.

It is very likely that, after three years, the INS might have given her a humanitarian visa, and some temporary relief to her parents.

On the other hand, I have not seen a direct quote from the INS indicating the correct immigration status of Jesica.

Yea, I am sure the INS will do their job and keep them out of the country. NOT

I thought most insurance would not cover most pre existing conditions, especially an illness that would be expected to cost so much. Also a health insurance policy we had in the past didn't cover certain transplants. I asked why and was told it was because Medicaid covered them.

I would like to hear the insurance companys say on this, not just what Mahoney says the insurance company is going to do.

How much you wanna bet they arranged that job for her--just so she could have those benefits?

Can the insurance company refuse to pay if they realize she was here illegally?

Like the dopey law about automatic citizenship to anyone born here . . .

They'll next try to make a law that an illegal immigrant who gets a transplanted American organ automatically become an American citizen!
