Labonte sets record to take Vegas Bud Pole

February 28, 2003
11:12 PM EST (0412 GMT)

LAS VEGAS -- Bobby Labonte broke the Las Vegas Motor Speedway qualifying record Friday night to take the top spot for Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.

Labonte toured the 1.5-mile Las Vegas track in 31.211 seconds, knocking Jeff Gordon off the pole. Gordon will start from the second position.

Labonte wins pole under the lights for Las Vegas race
By JENNA FRYER, AP Sports Writer

February 28, 2003

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Cool track conditions helped Bobby Labonte set a qualifying record at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where he waited out a long rain delay before winning the pole Friday night.

Labonte ran a lap at 173.016 mph around the 1 1/2 -mile oval to take the top spot and bump fellow Chevrolet driver Jeff Gordon to the outside of the front row.

Labonte's lap beat Todd Bodine's track record of 172.850 set last year.

``The car was very comfortable, it was two good laps for us,'' Labonte said. ``The car was good right off the truck. We just had a great day and a good little race car.''

Gordon, the third driver to make his run, sat on top of the leader board until Labonte went out 37 cars later. Wearing a winter hat pulled low over his ears, he watched Labonte speed around the fast asphalt from the top of his hauler.

He just shrugged when he saw the No. 24 Chevrolet slip into second on the board.

``That was a great effort for us,'' Gordon said. ``A little disappointing, but heck, I'm just glad to be up front. Bobby put a heck of a lap together.''

Ryan Newman was third in a Dodge, Dale Earnhardt Jr. fourth in a Chevy and Las Vegas native Kurt Busch fifth in a Ford.

The entire garage spent most of the day waiting out the rain after storms pushed everything back over five hours, meaning cars qualified under the lights on a cool track surface that was completely opposite from how it will be in the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 on Sunday.

Busch was disappointed he didn't take the top spot. Coming off consecutive second-place finishes to start the season, Busch wants to break into the win column this season in his backyard.

``The pressure is on,'' he said. ``I thought we could get the pole today for all the fans, but we came up just a little shy. The nice thing is that gives us a good starting position up front.''

The rain followed NASCAR into the desert, canceling all the morning on-track activities.

Qualifying was supposed to begin at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, but cars couldn't even get on the track for the hour-long practice session until 4 p.m.

That session was delayed when, with just a few minutes left in practice, Jack Sprague crashed his car and NASCAR needed time to clean the track.

The Busch Series cars were then allowed an hour of practice, and that session was halted by about 15 minutes after a fiery accident between Winston Cup drivers Jamie McMurray and Michael Waltrip.

So, it was almost 7 p.m. when qualifying finally began under the lights.

Busch, the current points leader, enjoyed turning his laps in the dark.

``It's pretty cool, this place just has that color to it and that character to it,'' Busch said. ``If we came here in September and ran a night race, it would be a lot of fun.''

Few teams had much fun through the day. Unhappy to be kept at the track all day, pestering NASCAR all morning to just set the field on car owner points. But Winston Cup director John Darby said once it stopped raining, canceling qualifying was not even considered.

``Sure it's easy enough to just set the field and send everyone home, but we need to remember what we're here for and that's racing,'' Darby said.

Then he pointed to the 20,000 fans sitting in the grandstands, patiently waiting to see cars run around the 1 1/2 -mile track.

``Those are the people we're here for, anyway,'' Darby said. ``And they've been waiting through this rain just like we have.''

It's the third straight week poor weather has plagued NASCAR. The season-opening Daytona 500 was shortened by 91 laps after two rain delays, then all but one practice session was wiped out last week in Rockingham, N.C.

Race Lineup for Sunday

UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 | Las Vegas Motor Speedway

March 2, 2003 | Race 3 of 36
Overview

Once qualifying is over, the field is set using a combination of timed laps and provisionals. The fastest 36 cars earn a place on time, while positions 37-43 are determined by a process which may include last season's final owners standings, current owners standings and former champions. The provisionals are assigned in descending order, beginning with the highest ranking owner in the standings. The lone exception is the Daytona 500, which uses two qualifying races to determine the field.

Sure does. ;-)

I don't like the way they look this year being that they went away from the Monte Carlo template but if it helps them to compete better on the "handling" tracks I guess I can live with it. :^)

Look out for Dale Jarrett. or Elliott or Martin or Burton or Gordon. There's still quite a few very competitive seniors stil showing the youngsters a thing or two about racing with the big boys.

You know 88 wants one more championship trophy before he retires..., If 88 wins, he'll probably have it delivered to his house by a big brown truck. 8-o

All the cars look alike to me these days. Remember the distinct differences back in the old days. To heck with Aerodynamics! ;-)

How's Jr. gonna do tomorrow?

True. :^)

Everything is so even the little differences become big.

How's Jr. gonna do tomorrow?

He was doing well at Rockingham until that early get together between two other cars caused him do get into another car slowing down and he lost a front shock and burned a rotor. And even with that damage, he could hang with the leaders being a lap down for about 20 laps so the #8 team may have something on these handling tracks this year.
