LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. -- Seven people are charged with attacking a Lenoir County deputy's house with a gun that shoots potatoes. Officers say the homemade device could have injured or killed someone.

Authorities said the suspects took a section of PVC pipe and placed a potato in it. The suspects then allegedly put chemicals in one end of the pipe and ignited it, firing the potato.

"You could put an eye out with that thing"...

No joke.

The potato cannons I've made could launch a spud 400 yds and if fired at someones head from across the street would kill them.

All with a 4 second blast of Aquanet.

I have fired one a time or two. You can't believe how much fire power you can get from a little hair spray. These things definitely can kill and can be made easily with a little PVC and an igniter from a gas grill.

I prefer welding gas. Fires cleaner and don't have to use vice grips to get the thing open again.

I was "growed up" in a rural place with, like lots of plasces in N.C., not much else to do but drink beer and generate activity for the local SO. We made giant sling shots out of inner tube and shot bags of sand at their cars. Beer does not increase ones ability to operate a giant sling shot, I might add. Any way, after a stern talking to by large angry men with badges and guns, a ride to the station in handcuffs, our parents having to come get us in the middle of the night, and a rather zesty session with dads hand-tooled western belt, we quickly fould other ways to have "fun".

Ah, but then it's a carbide cannon and not a potatoe gun at all.

Just for the record, potato guns are not harmless toys.... A potato gun will shatter a cement block at semi-close range. It would be lethal fired at a person, and should never be fired at a structure....

These kids did something very dangerous. They should have stuck to TP...
