The Legislature's lawyers have issued a legal opinion that could unravel the centerpiece of Gov. Gray Davis' plan to bridge the state's massive budget gap.

The Legislative Counsel's Office, in a privately circulated opinion obtained by The Bee, concluded that California would be legally required to divert billions of dollars in revenues from Davis' proposed tax increases to schools rather than local governments.

Good old Doofus. I bet he's thinking "If only I had had the brains to address the electricity generating shortage in a rational way. But, hey, I DID successfully dump the blame for that mess on well chosen scapegoats. Now, who can be set up to take the rap for this fiasco?"

"Kalifornia, the Enron of Statehood."

Very Good! Excellent, in fact!!!

Has CA ever had a Governor dumber than Davis???

I'm beginning to think he's being sacrificed by the Luddite-Environazi croud in their "turn back the economic growth" campaign.

This might explain why the teachers I know for the most part are ready to tar and feather Davis and then really get mad at him.

No, Kalifornia hasn't had a worse gov'na.
New York did.. 14 years of Emperor Cuomo...
And teh state STILL isn't out of the hole he put it into, and teh state assembly Democrats aren't motivated to turn it around.
Not in their interests.

Same thing in Kalifornia, Enron on a massive scale.

"Enron on a massive scale."

But... But... But... Din't he say Enron and Texas and their friends in the White House triggered alla his crisis problems???

Now I hear on KSFO that he's surrounded his highness with a long list of personal assistants at well over $100,000/year salaries, EACH!!!

Don'tcha think that'll solve the budget problems with alla these additional "Pubic Servants?" Cumon now, let's be FAIR about alla this! (evil grin)

Dear God..
100K EACH?!
Who does Grey Davis think he is, Cuomo redux?

Awww man... I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything at the moment. Yes, I do believe that Davis was heard stating that his fiefdom's problems were the fault of everyone else's mismanagement but his own.
Priceless.
And the commies in the state can't admit that he's an egregious error at the least and should be dumped from the gov'naship ASAP. They're wedded to an ideaology that does not permit questioning those in power.
Too sweet.. .and they handed it out on a silver platter.
Too bad the 'mainstream media' won't report all the mismanagement in California for the same reasons the commies instate won't oust the bum.
*chuckling*

"I'm wonder what economic growth they're whining about...."

Well you should see it, maaaaan!!! CA has been entirely paved over with freeways and urban sprawl along with every year-round stream being dammed and ugly strip malls ruining the environment along with poor people being priced out of homes creating rampant homelessness while the rich get richer through car-tax breaks brought on by those rascally Republicans that further encourages SUV's choking the freeways which means WE HAVE TO STOP ALL THIS PROGRESS!!! (/dripping sarcasm)

You mean something like the 'housing boom' here in New York where they're building insanely over priced outhouses that sit empty for years before anyone buys them?
(Three bedroom, one bath house with 1/4 acre or less going for 190,000. This in an area where the typical income is 32,000 or less. and near 55% or more of your income leaves by way of taxes before you can even pay bills.)

Yeah, there's a supposed housing booom out this way. The Banks and contruction business doesn't seem to understand that people just don't have it. But they'll try to create the market themselves. Can't wait for the bottom to drop out on them. I know of at least three banks that will end of owning several thousand acres and yet go bankrupt.
Once again, a State Enron in progress.

Kalifornia, the Enron of Statehood.

Boy, that doesn't say much for your state of Nu York Since that's where Gray Davis is from, NY. Oh and so is Boxer.

And who is your Senator? Oh yeah, Hillary Clinton......

So I guess that makes NY the Barnum and Bailey of Statehood.

Okers.
I'm not sure about Barnum and Bailey of the states.
I think that goes to New Jersey and their insane Car Insurance plans as well as their environmental policy.
(You can't kill rodents, the PETA nuts go ga-ga over it.)

But possibly it's the Cirque Du Soliel.
Maybe even 'The Gong Show' of the States...

Too many of them are into the pain thing for that to be effective torment.
'Course, one always COULD burn a huge bonfire in front of them while eating a burger and smoke a good pipe filled with longcut #4.

Still can't get over the push for a "Zero Emission" car when COWS are more harmful to the enviornment than cars.
(Yes, thay did do a study on how many cubic liters of methane cows put out.. and it puts cars to shame. Tax dollars to study bovine gas.. yeesh.)

$8.3 billion raised from increasing taxes on shoppers, smokers and top earners.

The top one-quarter of 1 percent of the state's income taxpayers - just 32,000 people - already pay nearly one-third of all state income taxes. When I saw this I fell out of my chair.

I don't suppose these 32,000 "rich" people are passing on those taxes to consumers via higher cost of good and services?
