MSNBC Dumps Phil Donahue

Donahue's final show will be Friday night. The news show that precedes him on the air, "Countdown: Iraq," temporarily will be expanded to two hours to replace him.

"We're proud of the program and we're disappointed that the show was not able to attract the viewership we had hoped for and expected," said Erik Sorenson, MSNBC president. "We thank Phil and his staff for their dedication, commitment and passion."

Donahue's office referred calls to his agent, and he did not immediately return a call for comment.

The move was not a surprise. MSNBC hoped "Donahue" would provide a liberal counterweight to Fox News Channel's competing "The O'Reilly Factor," but the ratings started poorly and didn't improve.

MSNBC tried to tweak the show in November, putting Donahue in front of a live audience in New York instead of in a New Jersey studio, but it made little difference.

The political talk show format has yet to prove — and may never that it can support a liberal voice, said Andrew Tyndall, head of ADT Research, a television news consulting firm.

Donahue's chances weren't helped by MSNBC's impatience, he said.

"They're very quick to cancel shows," Tyndall said. "Right from the start, they haven't settled on a format and let it grow so people can find it. If it's not working in a few months, they cancel it and move on to something else."

MSNBC also has sought a younger audience than its cable news rivals and the hiring of Donahue, 67, went against that strategy. "Anyone who's under 25 doesn't remember when his old talk show was on the air," Tyndall said.

During this month, a "sweeps" month in which ratings are watched closely to set advertising rates, "Donahue" averaged 446,000 viewers. O'Reilly drew 2.7 million viewers, up 28 percent from February 2002, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Connie Chung's CNN show that debuted shortly before "Donahue" averaged 985,000 viewers this month, Nielsen said.

"Countdown: Iraq," with Lester Holt as host, is one of the network's few success stories, occasionally inching past CNN to second in the cable news ratings.

Donahue was a nine-time Daytime Emmy winner for his syndicated talk show, which began in 1967 and aired nationally from 1970 to 1996, paving the way for dozens of such shows to follow.

He began his MSNBC show July 15 with a panel discussion on whether the United States should try to oust Saddam Hussein. On Monday night, with Rosie O'Donnell as guest, they talked about the same topic.

The show's failure is "a footnote" to Donahue's career, Tyndall said. "His legacy is unharmed," he said. "He invented an entire genre of television."

Perhaps Phil will find work at CBS now that Saddam Hussein is editing the news over there.

Our local radio talk show host, Martha Zoller from WDUN, was to appear on his show tonight. I guess she scared them.

My guess is that Phil will get a radio show on that new left-wing radio service. He'll get fired from that spot, too. Maybe he can fill in for Bill Press on his days off.

Does anyone know what time Phil is on (eastern time). I'm preparing a dish of baked crow, and need to know when to serve it.

The political talk show format has yet to prove — and may never that it can support a liberal voice, said Andrew Tyndall, head of ADT Research, a television news consulting firm.

This is because there are three types of liberals: The politicians who will do whatever it takes to remain in office, the nutjobs who have a hidden agenda, and the automatons who would rather be watching "Wil and Grace" than thinking about politics. The third category makes up the overwhelming majority of liberals, and includes people like my sister-in-law. She admits that she has no interest in politics, and would never watch a political television show. But she has some vague idea that democrats are pro-poor and pro-minorities, and she is a rich Catholic, so she votes liberal because she thinks that she is doing the right thing. And when I try to show her why she is wrong, she says "I don't want to talk about it."

Yes. Donahue has hit rock bottom with Rosie.
But I heard that Ted Nugent is on his show tonight. It really would have been a hoot to have Ted and Rosie on at the same time.

That's nonsense. All they need is a total monopoly of all the points of view on television. Back when they had that, Donahue was a big hit.

Now of course there's a bit more "diversity" on television, and on radio, and it turns out that when people actually have a choice, the liberals come in last. Oh well.

After all the fanfare that the liberal media gave to Donahue's debut...which was supposed to be this huge challenge to conservatives in the media. Specifically O'Reilly on FOX...what happened?

MSNBC gave Donahue more promotion than any show, and after all the publicity from the left...he still bombed.

I predict the new liberal network which is also designed to challenge conservatives success in the media, will also flop.

I found this "reason" for Donawho's demise at a lib site, thought it was hilarious;

Unfortunately, the only people who can stay home all day and watch TV are rich right wing conservatives, which is why liberal talk shows don't do so well. Us liberals are all out working for a living and spending time with our families. You know, family values and all...

Excuse me lib Clymer, Donahue was on at night. He was your boy and you didn't support him with ratings. That's the reason he's going off, not enough viewers because he's selling something only the fringe is buying. Most of America was walking away from being force fed negative liberal messages before 9/11.

Anybody who knew anything about TV did a whiplash when they HIRED this guy. I don't blame Donahue (he's encased in amber, circa 1974, so what else is new?). I blame the incompetent suit at MSNBC who hired this DOA dinosaur. Good grief. What did they expect? Heads should not only roll, they should be exported to France. But if they are replacing Mr. Donahue with Lester Holt, I guess that's a good sign that someone is awake at the switch. He's (Holt) great: he's not liberal, conservative, pro-war, anti-war. In other words, he's a blessed relief from all the other schmucks trying to out- O'Reilly Dan Rather in the arrogant opinionated editorializing which passes for journalism these days.Alleluia!
